Sure you can, if you want the front of your car higher than the rear...
Hi All,
Am I (and a 4wd mechanic) right in thinking that I can replace my factory front springs with some aftermarket ones (say to give me a small lift only - but mainly to replace the factory ones with something stronger)....
...and NOT do anything to my rear SLS setup?
I have heard of spacer kits (at 4x4intelligence for example), but if I dont have to get an expensive custom made kit and pay for the fitting, then I would prefer not to!
Thanks,
Chazb.
Sure you can, if you want the front of your car higher than the rear...
So I take it the SLS wouldnt adjust to the difference in the height at the front?!
OK, thanks.
AFAIK the SLS sensors only maintain a set gap between the chassis and rear trailing arms.
Therefore if you lift the front, the back will still remain the same height.
Technically you can raise the rear SLS simply by putting a spacer in the sensor arm.... this will force the system to run higher pressure/height. However I don't know what the longevity of the bags would be under those conditions although there is the extended mode switch which does this anyway under limited conditions i.e. below 30km/h.

Running the Air Bags higher than designed will vastly shorten their life, if you lift the sls too much (by extending the sensor arms) you also risk allowing the bag to over expand (blow out the top clamp) -they are just standard rolling air bellows...
If you want to lift the rear by extending the sensor arm you should either change the Air Bag to a longer one or get a spacer kit.

Just to finalise this query; if I bought standard height coil springs for the front....do I have to do anything with the rear sls at all?
Thanks,
Chazb.
Chazb,
Yesterday I lifted the front of my disco 2" and put the spacer kit in the rear.
Price for the spacer kit was $300 odd inc postage and it comes with all the instructions, an easy job, the longest part of doing the job (back) was jacking up and lowering the car when finished, It would take a mechanic less than 1hr with a hoist, or you a couple with jack stands and jacks. Just thought Id mention it inc you were wondering.
Yours
Mark
