    Detroit/True Track

Im trying to make the best possible decision of diff innards.

I want the best possible solution obviously, and with my mechanical knowledge bordering my 18month old nephew, I seek help.

My understanding is Detroit is full lock when one wheel slips when the other doesn't. True trac locks in the same way, but full lock is limited to 80 percent.

My reason for lockers is to make obstacles easier for myself and my car. Id much rather crawl over things, than cowboy it along.

1 - Im leaning towards Detroit rear, True Trac front. Does this combo pose any issues in an 02 110?

2 - Would there be any scenarios where this combo may get me into trouble?

3 - These lockers are, I assume, fine with CDL/traction control?

Anyone else who plans to buy lockers in the next round of purchases, feel free to hijack this thread.

1: No - it will be all good.
2: No - traction aids don't get you into trouble, YOU get you into trouble
3: Yes - the traction control will actually have to intervene less as traction loss is less likely.

Its been discussed before, have a search.

They are different designs. The Detroit is really an unlocker. Trutrac is a gear type LSD. No clutches to wear out. It channels the torque to the wheel with the most grip, up to 3:1. But it has have some traction on both wheels. Lift a wheel, & 3x 0 =0. But thats where traction control helps.

Find the manufacturers site, there are some warnings there - or used to be - about downhill in slippery conditions with a detroit. Not that we have a lot of snow & ice.

I've seen problems with a detroit not unlocking in sand in tight turns, making the car a bit hard to manouver. But others here say no such problems.

You'll have a very capable car. When it gets stuck, it'll be really stuck.

    Regards

Have you considered using manually operated lockers instead?

Indeed I have. Autos sit better with me at this stage. I like the fact that I wont have full lock on the front. Im pretty convinced autos are the best decission, but if you think im miss-guided, by all means speak up.

I think each to their own.

For me selectables are good because I need full control over their operation for the stuff that I like to drive. Sometimes I need full locked on the front for the pull, sometimes I want to be unlocked on the front to maintain direction. When on really bad side angles I really appreciate being unlocked so that I get wheelspin before driving it onto its side - just an indicator. If I get wheelspin, then I can chose to lock and continue or back out.

For a tourer I think TT's front and rear with ETC would be excellent based on what I hear, but a locker in the rear (irrespective of what it is) is more positive.
