    TD5 into Disco 1

I am thinking of finding a TD5 to put into my D1 300TDi auto, I think that I will be able to do this cheaper than buying a D2

I am chasing info/advice on this or if any one has seen this done?

I would prefer to mate the D1 auto to the TD5 as it is non computerised but I am not sure as to weather it will handle to power.

My car is set up how I want it (another factor for not changing) but I crave more power now that I have a bigger trailer (I can't get up Cunninghams Gap at the speed limit anymore).

The TDi was rebuilt 15k ago however the auto needs a rebuild. I was thinking of chipping the TD5 for more power so I would have built the box stronger.

Why not just buy a td5? They are not that much more expensive than a tdi - especially by the time you convert (if at all possible ??? - why bother) it over......

    Well thats the point,

Most D2's don't have the off road stuff on them, also alot of the stuff I have won't change over. Things like the custom rear bar, second and third battery wiring, diff locks, seats, cargo barrier even springs and shocks don't swap.

Nearly all the D2's are road warriors and a bull bar is 2k as a starting point + rear seats add another 2k + suspension 600 etc so the base car at 18 - 20 k really adds up quick.

But I have seen TD5's engines and ec's for around 4k so this seems the way to go.

    Unless a TDV6 or TDV8 comes up

    Hi Danny.

What if you got a TD5 and computer from a D130 which doesn't have all the electronic add ons like traction control etc?

That would make the headache less I would think.

George130 has a TD5 D130 with a Disco1 auto. I think it is even for sale. Although it would come with the D130.
You could have the motor and box and you could give me the rest and I'll put a V8 in it

He quoted something like $9k to bolt the Disco1 auto to the TD5 but he bought it like that.
He would be worth talking to anyway regards the auto box conversion.

    Have fun.

The D1 and D2 24 spline air lockers do swap over actually. Front and rear up to a certain date then it is just the front. That is for the RD56.

That's going by memory from when I had the locker but not the car

Might be easier to put in the International 2.8, straight replacement for the 300Tdi and comparable Td5 power and torque.

Yes mine does have a D1 auto mated to the TD5. And it is for sale.

If you want to turn a D1c into a TD5. You would want a front cut. to get the wiring, ECU etc.

    Not sure that its feesable.
Too much electronics to swap over.
    Its not just the ECU.
    SLABs,BCU,speedo,SRS etc etc etc.
Not impossible, just a lot of sorting out to be done.
A chevy diesel V8 may be alot easier to do.
An uprated turbo/intercooler/fueling and lpg injection would get you into td5 power levels easily, and you still get to keep your rebuilt TDi.
