This is about my 2a, but applies to all Series Landrovers except very early 80" and Stage 1.
I am going over the 2a checking it over for the trip to Cooma. I noticed that the pin that stops the gearlever rotating was not working properly - so I ordered a new pin and pulled the gearlever out today (with the floor out, four bolts removes the whole assembly). I then found that the problem was not with the pin, or perhaps more accurately not only with the pin. It was loose in its hole in the alloy casting that sockets the ball, and the hole was enlarged.
To fix this problem, I fully disassembled it (the four bolts holding the casting to the bracket were two Whitworth and two UNC, just to make spanner choice interesting). I then drilled out the hole for the pin, and tapped it to 7/16" W. I then made up a steel bush by cutting off about 10mm from a 7/16" bolt and drilling and tapping it 1/4UNF to fit the pin. The bush is loktited into place in the casting, and should last longer than the original.
I also found the O-ring on the tip of the lever missing, so I replaced that as well. Every little bit helps to reduce noise!
