1985 on RR Speedo - How do I fix?

    Gang,

I am sure it has been covered here before (but I didn't own one then!)

What is the fix on a Range Rover 1985 update dash speedo? It doesn't work.

    Cheers

It is usually the right angel drive at the end of the cable at the back of the instrument binnacle. Plastic gears - you need to replace it with a new one.

Take it off first and check function with a screw driver.

If RA drive O.K - then hold the end of the cable outer and see if you can rotate the cable inner - if you can the inner is broken. Replace

WARNING When you unscrew the collar on the end of the cable make sure it doesn't run down into the dash - its a bug*** to get back - you can use a paper clip around the cable.

I just replaced the angle drive on my speedo.
If you are careful ,have patience and a short screwdriver, you can remove the plactic back of the instruments and see the back of the speedo.
there is just enough room between the windscreen and the back of the speedo to remove the angle drive and replace it.
No need to remove the instruments as explained in the workshop manual.
Good luck to not drop the 2 little screws or let the cable collar fall(as lots of landies mentions)
Thanks to paxton for this tip.

First check if the odometer is still working.
Mine got gummed up, the odo was still rolling around (gears still good) but the needle wouldn't move.

It's unlikely that you'll need a new right angle drive if, like mine, it has metal gears.

The plate at the end comes out allowing the gears to fall out of mesh.

Push the plate back home after ensuring the gears are in mesh, then clean up around the plate and the housing and epoxy the plate in.

I did that on mine and it lasted for years.
