    A blown head gasket

    Hi all,

Not sure if this should be in this section, but here it goes.

Around 3 weeks ago, my 94, 3.9 Disco on petrol and LPG started showing signs of a blown head gasket.
I have not had it checked yet by a mechanic, however I have spoke to a few who based on the symptoms, have advised either a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

Basically, when it’s running, it will pressurize the cooling system within the first 5 minutes. It does not overheat, however after 5 minutes of running, if you open the radiator cap, a lot of air/gas comes out which smells strongly like fuel.

I have asked at a couple of workshops, however neither show the desire to touch it and both have said that not being LR experts, it may take longer to complete. ($$$)

My question is, does anyone recommend a good LR mechanic in the Brisbane area that can do a good job at a reasonable price (ei, not a LR dealership).

    - Blknight.aus, are you still looking for Landrovers that need work done on them at Amberley??

not really Im at 84% complete so unless you have a hydraulics problem or a decent electrical problem Im out, I'll update the what I need list later.

Send GuyG a message and find out who did his engine, apart from a few little things they didnt do a bad job on his, No I dont mean me, I mean the mob that redid his bottom end and heads.

might as well go a new cam, port and polish while your at it.

What a load of garbage. A Landrover V8 is no different from any other V8 to work on. They are obviously incompetent and should be avoided at all costs.

As I was just thinking. They are a Buick based engine and as simple to work on as any Holden. To many dipstick, brain dead so called mechanics around that can not work on anything outside a Toyota engine.
A head gasket on a Rover V8 is a simple job.
    Hope you find someone.

Rover engines are not harder (and often easier) to work on than Jap engines. However, things are done a bit differently, and this can get an inexperienced mech into a lot of trouble. They also normally don't have the literature. This is one reason there are so many DIYers in the Landrover field.

Basically, if they don't want to do it, don't make them! Keep ringing around, and you will get someone not only much cheaper, but eager to do it. Otherwise get some tools and get stuck into it yourself.

    Blown head gasket

wrex I have the exact same problem with my 4.6 it's been doing that form about a month when finally it split my resivour tank and overheated I'm pulling it apart this weekend to find out what the problem is in my case it could be a cracked block as the 4.6 seem to have this problem the cylinder walls are to thin and often crack where the water jackets run past the 3.9 litre dont seemed have this problem so you could be lucky it could just be a head gasket you could try MR automotive at kippa ring but they are busy so you will need to book it in another mob that have been helpful is britsh off road near forest glen just of the highway. These places aren't too close to you but thats all i can think of hope this helps

Firstly, the LR V8 is a very simple engine and easy to repair.
A lot better than a Jaguar DOHC six

    Hi Guys
Bet I can save both of you a bucket full of money here.
Run it petrol only I bet the problem is fixed!!!!
Both my last Ser3 on gas and our Rangie has done the same.
Im pretty sure your converter is stuffed(the unit that warms the gas with coolant)
They leak LPG into the cooling system mimicking a head gasket failure. That fuel smell, its actually LPG smell mixing into the coolant is the giveaway.
I replaced the head gasket in the 202 powered Series3 only to find it was still a problem. When it happened on the Rangie I was spot on with the diagnosis.
There are rebuild kits for the converter, but I would just get a new one fitted and tuned. They are just over $200 for a newie plus fit/tune.
    GOODLUCK

That sounds more feasible than a blown head gasket, actually, would like to see if the problem is a gasket or the Convertor, easy to check, as you said, Regards Frank
