td5 service time

cheers foz. do i need to drop the auto trans "sump" to change the filter?

i want to flush the trans and renew the filter as i dont think its been serviced in a while. fluid is dark and smells a bit burnt.

i hate how many cars dont have a trans dipstick. people seem to figure "no dipstick, no need to service" my ba had the same setup.

the RHS bolt holding engine cover goes into a cage/captive nut. If this is spinning, it will be difficult to remove. You can try and get a screwdriver under the cover to hold the nut still while you unscrew the bolt, but if it's been loctited or is stiff, you may have to pull the bolt head through the engine cover rubber grommet.

The quickest check for oil coming from the injector harness is the connecting plug at the front of the motor - I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove engine cover to check this (I don't have my engine cover on for slightly improved cooling). If there's oil in this, then you obviously need to go further and check if it made it's way through the main/ECU wiring loom all the way to the ECU (once again, just disconnect the plug at the ECU to check this).

That right hand side engine cover bolt is a bastard. It is held on with a captive nut that only has a couple of piddly crimps on the sides.What has happened is the nut has slipped or the crimps have broken.

Luckily on that side the bolt hole in the cover has a rubber grommet bush which you can push out with a screwdriver then the bolt head will go through the cover which you can then remove.

Yes I believe you do. Didn't get from your first post that you had an auto. The size of the gearbox drain plugs may be different to what I said earlier as I was refering to the manual box.

Hi I picked up the full service kit for the td5 and the ZF atu for $99 on ebay thus had all the filters including the transmision filter. But i only use a ryco oil filter so i would have the oil filter left over. the reason i use only a Ryco filter is that it is 5mm shorter had so much easier to fit with no chance of cross threading
