Don't know what the auto D1 should sit on at 100k but it will not be as low as a sedan can manage, the Rover weighs alot more and the engine needs to be kept on the boil a little more so to speak. Poor fuel consumption unfortunately is how they is, basically a combination of an old school low compression 2 valve engine with very basic engine management. And that Falcon is a straight six BTW.

Revs don't really correlate to fuel consumption in a text book fashion. It would use a lot more fuel revving at, say 1250, than 2500 as more than likely it would be labouring at 1250 to move the thing.

haec verba locutus my Tdi Auto disco IIRC (and I might be wrong as I've hardly has it long) does 2250 rpm at 100. The manual did 2500 at 100 and 2750 at 110.

Take the tacho reading as a grain of salt, They're generally out on bloody rovers, dum idea driving off the tacho, not the coil neg

For starters, where did you get a V6 Falcon?
Did it have a yank Explorer motor fitted?

Secondly, if your V8 Disco is cruising at 100km/hr doing 2500 rpm, that is normal. The Disco is two tonne has a far less powerful motor than a Falcon which also weighs a lot less.

The fuel economy is terrible because the Discovery is shaped like a brick, is a lot higher, heavier and gutless.

The torque range of the LR V8 is also quite high, so, if you drive it at 120kph, you will get better pickup

I use my 97 V8 SE7 for towing a Caravan and I'm doing all sorts of things to make it sing

So far I've fitted an air snorkel to get more cold air and a big exhaust to get rid of the ex gas!

Geelong Engine plant is on the chopping block and Ford V6's from the US will be in the local product.

Interesting to see how different the fortunes of the two big makers in Oz are turning.

Holden Exports engines and Cars and is (almost) growing.

Ford makes Oz only product and is following leyland, chrysler and now Mitsubishi down the slippery slop of falling profits and pressure from the parent company to perform.
