D2 Starter Inhibitor Switch
As failure of this switch (on Td5 auto's) appears to be a fairly common problem, is it possible to to make a 'dummy switch' to plug into the multiplug to temporarily bypass the OE switch and enable you to get home?
Maybe one of the AULRO Electrical Guru's could advise something like 'connect the red and green wire from the multiplug together'.
It would be handy to carry something like this on a remote area trip as not being able to start your motor due to the failute of this switch assembly could be really inconvenient.

As this switch has just failed in my Disco, I was wondering if the special tool referred to in 'Rave' is really necessary for installing the replacement switch or can it be aligned by other means?

hmmm, not edit...
Actually, come to think of it, I have heard of it not starting and experienced this. It's usually not the switch, but because the gear lever is slightly out of Park.

A fellow club member had to replace one recently and I got hold of his old one, pulled it apart and detected corrosion and burnt contacts inside the 'sealed' housing.
Upon inspecting the actual location of the switch on my Disco I discovered that, like the double cardan joint, it is located below the passenger side air-con drain and I feel that this could be the cause of the problem. My switch is seeping water from around the join.
I'll replace it tomorrow and then, when time permits will dismantle and inspect old one.
The starting trouble commenced some weeks ago and yes wriggling the gear lever around in 'park' usually got it going. However, it has been getting worse lately and sometimes has to left for a while before coming back and trying again. It was so bad this morning that SWMBO had to take the 'Fender instead of the Disco!

i just replaced mine without the tool ok - helped to have someone else in the cab while i twisted it either way to find the sweet spot. i opened my old one up and it looked more like failure due to wear than corrosion, though i did have a big AC water problem at one stage that flooded the cab due to blocked drain, since then have lengthened the drain on that side below the inhibitor to be safe.

If you suspect a faulty inhibitor switch, as a first step take the plastic console cover off and check for rubbish restricting movement of the selector lever. This happened to me when the lever would not go fully into Park and was a much easier fix!

sounds like something to check in that situation as they arent cheap even second hand... in my case 'N' didnt register at all, no shifter light or dash letter.

this is my switch once opened. un repairable as its worn down , rather than water damage.
