    TD5 Gearbox oil leak question

Has anyone heard of a TD5 leaking gearbox oil from around the reversing light switch area?

I have the car at the dealers at the moment, and got a call saying they are sure the leak (previously thought by another mechanic to be transfer case leaking - another job to be fixed up properly as he joined it back up with the wrong sealant and made the leak worse....another story though) is gearbox oil. They want to clean it up and take it on a drive, but they reckon the leak is coming from around the reversing light switch???

I'll hop onto Rave now and see if I can work out if I am being led up the garden path a little bit....at least they are giving me a cheap option to fix it first rather than ripping out the transmission I suppose.

OK, I had a look on Rave and now understand what they are talking about....however its a pretty bad leak and leaves an unpleasant stain on the road overnight.

Maybe its a combination of the transfer case being bodged back together and the leak from the reversing light switch? Oh well, hopefully they will sort it out before my big trip

Joined up what? Generally speaking you don't have to dismantle anything on a transfer case, then reseal it. They don't tend to leak from the "glued" on plate on the underside.

Thanks BigJon. I think I am getting somewhere with my local LR dealer....if people are interested:

After replacing the reversing light switch (which was definitely leaking) and cleaning everything up, there is now an obvious leak coming from the intermediate shaft/seal - which is lower down than the reverse light switch proving the reverse light switch leak is sorted). Also to add to this when the other 4wd mechanic had a go at fixing a/the oil leak in this area (and couldnt) he put whatever he took apart, back together with the wrong sealant which is also leaking a bit.

All in all its very wet down there and after looking at it whilst on the hoist today I agree with my local LR dealer that they can have it for the next 3 days to finally sort it before I go on my big trip! I am bracing myself for a several hundred $ bill as they will have to pull the transfer case out (from my understanding), but I want it fixed and dont have the tools to do it myself.

Also could be from the trans oil cooler lines? The adapter etc is next to the reverse lamp switch...
