thumping changes 2-3 in TD5 auto

    Hi,
our 99 TD5 Auto with 130000km on the clock has recently developed an intermittent very harsh change from 2nd to 3rd. Seems to happen a bit more when very hot otherwise no real pattern.
The normal very smooth change is very noisy - a real bang! - and harsh, as though the change has happened with the transmission and torque converter locked, as though the gear change was effected with a dog clutch.

It has been suggested that one of the solenoids is on the way out.. I see in RAVE that there are 4 of these on the valve body..

Any one had a similar experience or knowledge of what might be required to fix this?

i have the same model and trans, with more kays than yours though. in my case 1-2 can be a bit harsh at times. as though its going straight to lock-up as you describe. i did a trans fluid change (well 5ish litres thru the drain plug) and it has improved things at least 80%. i'm gonna reflush it and also change filter this time too to see if i get a further improvement.

A fluid and filter change can help, if some of the valve body solenoids are sticky, fresh oil and a clean filter can help.
With a Td5, the Airflow meter can also have a bearing on the transmission shift quality/ timing. This is because the auto's shift software relies on engine output and load etc to calculate and perform shift operations at the right times.
