Drainage is a problem where an outrigger meets a chassis rail. Even if it's a "bottomless" outrigger, if the chassis is hung at the wrong angle then you can get an air pocket and the zinc can't get in. The same goes for any crossmember where it meets a rail. This is why the chassis builders in England do such a lovely job on a new chassis, because they've already worked out how to do it right, and they also deal with professional galvanisers, unlike the four separate idiot companies I've tried over the years.

I have had my Series 1 chassis done.

I rang the galvanisers first and found out from them exactly what they wanted as far as drain holes and cleanliness was concerned.

    Happy with the result

What about spray on galv, particularly if there is already some rust?

Wouldn't that resolve some of the access/drainage problems mentioned?

That's what incompetent galvanisers give you when they realise they missed some spots!

It's good for touch-ups but with hot-dip galvanising it's the molten zinc and the heat of it that does the trick of binding it to the steel in a way so much better than paint.

Galvanising is well worth it. It's just finding someone capable that's the trick.

I had a lwb S2A chassis done and it was not heavier to pick up with two blokes, and with a great finish in all areas. They dipped it on a 45deg angle to the side and level front to back. The way I did it was I drilled 10mm holes in each corner of the tops and bottoms of each crossmember, outrigger and every foot of the main rails(two holes in the top close to the sides and same on the bottom).Areas where there are two layers of steel which are fully welded need to be drilled aswell,or you get a bubble effect where the air inside expands and pushes the two sections apart.I used rubber blanking grommets to cover every hole in the top of the chassis and left the bottom ones open,so you can wash it out.Cheers Eric.

Noooooo no spray on stuff, if your going to do that you might as well just go spray on fish oil.

the best thing for the draining is to goto one of those places that lifts with 2 hoists that can tilt it as they lift it and they just rockit back and forth sloshing the galv out.

    Chassis. The same word.

What is the cost of having this done - I might be interested on my IIA project?

Thanks for pointing that one out Ron.....

of course you realise that Im going to have to kill anyone who actually works out the pun now that youve identified it, national security you know.

might be worth looking into what bulk chassis galving will cost.. If its worth the savings and people are willing to chip in on fuel I might grab the car trailer from work and take 5-6 in at once if we find someone who knows their stuff.
