there shouldn't be any hassles pulling it apart, there's just a planetary gearset in there and a sliding spline dog clutch.
I'm naughty and never had mine apart either to service.

IIRC Warn recommend Aeroshell 17 to grease the thing, but that's an aircraft spec moly fortified di-ester based synthetic grease, and I'm damned if i know where you'd buy it.

Apparently Aeroshell 17 is being replaced by

    AeroShell Grease 33MS

printable version Launch of AeroShell Grease 33MS We are very pleased to announce the launch of our new product "AeroShell Grease 33MS", a powerful new addition to the AeroShell Grease range of products and also the perfect partner for our existing product AeroShell Grease 33.

AeroShell Grease 33MS is an extreme pressure (EP) grease based on the proven lithium complex technology of AeroShell Grease 33, and is fortified with 5% Molybdenum Disulphide.

The benefits of Grease 33MS include:
    • Improved anti-wear and corrosion resistance over AeroShell Grease 17
    • It is fully compatible with AeroShell Grease 33, so reduces the risks and problems associated with misapplication
    • Load carrying and EP properties equal to that of the well established AeroShell Grease 17
    • Fully approved to MIL-G-21164D
It possesses enhanced anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties and is particularly suitable for lubricating heavily loaded sliding steel surfaces, such as, for example, bogie pivot pins on aircraft landing gear-assemblies.

AeroShell Grease 33MS is a direct alternative to AeroShell Grease 17, but when changing from (clay-based) ASG 17 to (Li-complex based) ASG 33MS, the normal rules on grease changing should be applied.

looking at the specs of Aeroshell 33MS, any good NLGI 2 lithium complex 3-5% moly grease would work ok, like Castrol LMM, or Castrol SBX2 would be better.

The best grease would possibly be the range of Calcium Sulfonate 5% moly CAT (as in Caterpillar) greases sold to lubricate their dozers, etc. They should have better corrosion resistance and water washout properties than a Lithium complex grease, but again, arent easy to find.
