    AAARRGGHHH!!! td5 disco

ok, so now my car surges/when accellerating hard. does it 30% of the time when i boot it from takeoff in the last 1000revs in first and its alot worse when i floor it at 80k's and it kicks back to 2nd. in this situation it really lunges and basically sucks! seems to be again in the last 1200rpm range, when my foot is flat or close to it.

any ideas anyone? its warranty, so whatever it is i want it fixed.

also i got the engine mount changed and it has helped my droning problem at around 2000-2300rpms by about 40%, but its still there. are there any other things to look for? could this surging be related.

My dad's did this recently, the fix on his was on the steel tube from the turbo to the intercooler there is a small tube that connects to a nipple on the steel tube, it had come off. the other end of the little pipe goes to the little modulator valve in the side of the aircon compressor then on to the wastegate actuator. Check all the little hoses and clamps. he had lost the clamp down at the big pipe.
I think what happens is the ECU works out that the engine is overboosting because the wastegate doesn't function, and momenterally shuts the engine down, then restarts it, then shuts it down.....and so on.

Let me know if that's the problem.

    Cheers,
    Fraser

Wastegate modulator is what it's called, the're around $50 from any dealer or Landy parts outlet, i did mine a couple of months back, one of the nipples that the pipe connect too broke.

Does the TD5 feel like a petrol engine that is missing especially floored off 60k or at around 3000 rpm? If you cannot see any holes, leaks, etc for the turbo hoses..Disconnect the MAF sensor plug and then take for a drive and floor it.

If the problem is not there now then you MAY WELL have a faulty MAF unit.

i bought a used one from triumph-rover in adelaide for 50 and another 70 to fit. its in very good nick. alot less harshness/backlash type feeling when coasting downhill and then getting back on the throttle again.

yeah it did feel a bit like a miss. from what ive read and been told it could either be the boost regulator solenoid thingo, or as you've suggested perhaps the maf.

my main problem was over 3500 in 1st and 2nd gears (auto).

what effect is disconnecting the maf having on the engine? if unplugging it makes the car better, cant we just always drive that way?

    thanks.

on a different note, at t.r.s. they said that the car felt really strong for a non-chipped car. they actually arent sure if perhaps it hasn't been reflashed.

and of course it didnt hesitate, surge while we test drove it!

sticky wastegate? hole in wategate actuator pipe? wastgate modulator? it sounds like it will be over boosting... hence the reason it feels strong.. and probably why its surging as has already been mentioned the ecu is possibly knocking back the power...

could always try disconnecting the wastgate actuator and see if it differs? be careful tho....

some more posts regarding this knocking around.. worth a search if you can (if i had time i would do it for you )

    Thanks

Another thing I didn't think of, has it done this since you bought it?
If so, someone may have adjusted the wastegate pushrod to up the boost a little, if it's overdone, what you are describing can be the result. if all the plumbing to the wastegate is okay, try adjusting the pushrod on the wastgate to make it a little longer (but count how far you adjust it so you can return it to where it is now if it has no effect). this could be why they said it goes so well!
I drove a td5 that I was considering buying and it had this problem so I let it go.

those last 2 ideas sound fair. i'll do the rod adjustment. i assume its that round part that u spin to lengthen/shorten the thread? is longer less boost and shorter more?

while i was there they plugged the car into testbook or whatever its called and no codes came up. wouldnt there be a report if the engine had noticed an overboost? the only code i saw was a cruise control engine overspeed warning. there was a second code, but it was abs related.
