Mine on the rangie are bolted to the sills.
Details are:
65 x 65 x 5 equal angle bolted to the sill, with the horizontal leg (of the angle section) on the underside of the sill and the vertical leg on the outside where the plastic was fixed.
Long bolts in the vertical leg go right through the sill with plate washers and nuts on the inside. You could use nutserts in the bottom of the sill for screws in the horizontal leg. Also use plenty of SikaFlex adhesive to bond the angle to the sill.
The vertical leg of the angle is notched out where the door pillars fix to the sills.
The step is 75 x 25 x 2.5 RHS (rectangular hollow section) welded to the vertical leg of the angle. The long direction is horizontal to form the step. It is pressed to a curve to match the underside of the doors and looks better than if left straight. Again notching was necessary at the door pillars.
These are plenty strong enough.
The fellow at 4wd action magazine, with the red rangie, made sliders using cold rolled 'rail' section. Rail is similar to SHS (square hollow section) but one side is shorter than the other three. I haven't seen these in person, but the magazine had an article on how he made them (with a video on the dvd), and they looked good. He used nutserts from memory to attach the sliders to the sill. The deeper rail section allowed him to incorporate some pipe through the section for using a high lift jack.
I can jack from my sliders but the pipe idea offers better security against the jack slipping.
