    G'day & Camshaft Advice

    G'day all!

My name is Edward, i drive a green 84 County 3.5, and i am new to these forums! I was at Cooma for the 60th anniversary and a lot of the people i met are on this forum so i decided to join!

I am currently seeking advice on choosing the best 'all-round' camshaft for my 3.5 V8 running on LPG. Ive heard that the 3.9 EFI cam is a nice one. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this camshaft, or does anyone recommend any others?

Also, i have heard conflicting opinions about the quality of genuine Rover lifters, with some people saying that they are the best lifters you can buy, whereas others say they wear out after 60 -70 000km's, and that i should invest in top quality aftermarket lifters. Does anyone have any experience or opinions with this matter?

    Thank you in advance!

    Edward

Welcome to the forum, picking a cam is a tricky item, I would talk to someone like Ward at Graham Coopers in Sydney and give him details of of what you require from your engine, what trans, diff ratios and wheel sizes, also post up where you are, it helps when recommending something, good luck, Regards Frank.

I would stick to a standard type cam personally. If you have a venturi type draw through gas system, you should maybe stick with the carby cam, as the air restriction will nullify any top end gains you get from a 3.9 cam anyway.
With regard to lifters, the books on the subject recommend "Crane" lifters, as they do not pump up at high revs, which will hardly be an issue for you.

Rover lifters I believe are Delphi or similar, and I think Holden V8 lifters are the same. I think stay with standard lifters. Their life depends on how often you change the oil and oil quality, although the small cam circle diameter of the Buick V8 is a known design flaw which causes lifter wear . V8s hate dirty oil and I change every 5K or so. Mine has 140K on it now and NO lifter noise or visible wear on the cam

    2 things,,,
    change the followers as well,,
and decide what you want the engine to do,,
make more torque or more power,,
your cam selection will depend on which way you go.

Most hi-profile() cam manufacturers have a selection giving you a choice.

after Cooma,, I might take a quick squizz myself.

Crow and Crane make good Gas Profile cams.
Talk to your local engine builder and ask them.
If you read the Rover V8 books out there, they say that the Rover V8 cam is very mild and can be improved with little drivability lost.

    Eddy,

running LPG in a Rover V8 requires careful cam choice, and your 84 should still have the high compression engine(9.35:1) and a LT95 4 speed with lowish high range. 1) Don't change the high ratio, as the smaller capacity of the engine requires a few more revs than say a 3.9 or 4.6 engine. 2) select a cam that works well around the rev range you are likely to encounter. With the standard high range in the 110 of that age, you should be around 2750rpm at 100kmh.(1.334:1 from memory?)the ideal cam for this sort of engine/ vehicle combination is something similar to a Dynotec PC217, or PC216. The 217 has about .455" exhaust lift and with some careful port matching, and less restrictive EFI exhaust manifolds, the little 3.5 can really go well. As far as LPG intake is concerned, it would be better if you can get a gas kit to suit twin SU's(or CD175's) with twin mixers/ converters. PM Stooge on this site, he has this setup on his RR, he can give you the manufacturers/ part numbers etc of the gas mixers.
The key here is that the 110 is a heavy brick shaped vehicle, the 3.5 is capacity challenged and needs to be allowed to rev to produce reasonable torque etc, and selecting tyre diameters and gearing is very important to get the most out of them.
Some will say go for bigger cubes, where this may definately be better for performance, the little 3.5 can be caned within an inch of its life all day with out hurting it
    Also;
One easy way to improve the power to weight ratio is to REMOVE the weight.
adding winches, roofracks, extra bits and pieces makes your vehicle slow to accelerate and slow to stop/ corner.

Thanks for all your replies fella's! In regards to your reply Justinc, yes i do have the high comp motor and LT95. I run 31 x 10.5 tyres so im running around 3000rpm at 100km. The motor has been port and polished, and has a larger exhaust and extractors. It has a stage 2 cam, so the motor revs well and feels good on the highway, however i would like a bit more low down torque. Would it be wise to step down from the stage 2 cam or am i on a winner?
