A welding question? TIG and MIG gas

I own a TIG welder, bought it earlyer in the year, its fantastic however, very slow going.

I have access to a MIG welder, that is currently set up as a GASLESS MIG.

I was thinking of using the ARGON that i hired for the TIG to run on the MIG as a sheilding gas. It is not the recomended gas, for MIG it asks for CO2 or somthing like that.

Has anyone done this, im trying to avoid the another $200 bill for gas. I am tempted to just give it a go and see if it works.

From the refences i found it looks like they use CO2 coz it is cheaper than argon.

    Thanks guys

For carbon steel mig welding shielding gas is usually a mix with a high proportion of CO2. Argon will shield the arc from oxygen that is in the air, but the arc is not as good (think hot) as the CO2 mix.

If you only want to weld carbon steel with the TIG, I think you could use the CO2 mix more successfully with TIG than using Argon with MIG. So it may be an option to change your account to suit.

This is just what I remember, others here, such as Lokka should have some better knowledge.

    Hi Mike
How about offering it up as a swap???
You may be able to swap over to another bottle of more appropriate gas with somebody in your vicinity.
I run argoshield light in my mig.

We run Argoshield also in the MIG's. I thought Argoshield was a blend of Argon and CO2 anyway.

I'm not sure what the bottle costs are, but if I was changing from TIG to MIG I would just run the Argon out and replace it next time with Argoshield.
    Cheers

    Mig

If you are going to weld all things automotive up to around 6mm in thickness, run 0.8 wire with ''Argoshield Light'' gas.

As others have mentioned ask around to borrow a bottle as it will only cost you the refill not the rental.

Well i finaly got onto a welding shop that knows what there on about, made the mistake of ringing the big supplier, local welding shop is heaps better.

Here is the story, You can run pure argon in a MIG for stainless and aluminum. It will work for mild steel in light gauge. However Argonshield contain CO2 to thin out the mix to save coin and OXY, the OXY is there to heat every thing up, and give you good penetration. Turns out that it is about half the price of the ARGON.

    Thanks for your replies

According to http://www.burnback.com.au/helppdf/gasinfo.pdf oxygen is used in small percentages in some shielding gases.
