D2 shafts and cv's are stronger than 24 spline d1 / Defender, however the diffs are identical.
You shouldnt break much d2 stuff when not doing really extreme stuff.
if you are willing to spend some serious cash, in my opinion the best drivetrain stuff for Landrovers is available from Ashcroft. I think this is better than all the others including maxidrive.
Ashcroft Transmissions
Pete.
The diffs are not identical, but they're not too far off. The D2 ones have a slightly different hemisphere which is stronger. A lot of the Rover diffs break the pin/shaft that holds the planetary gears in, where the D2 has a modified of this shaft and its locating design so now the planetary gears generally fail first rather than the shaft.
:)
Never snapped anything in the old patrol, busted 2 axles in the old f100 with a locker, I wont put this on my urgent list but will work my way to improving things,
In the mean time, having plenty of fun (with out smashing anything;).
Thanks
Thanks for that info Slunnie. I didnt know that! I have taken a few of them apart too!!;)
Pete
I used to think that Land Rover diffs are weak but I think that this is all relative after I did some research into Toyota diffs.
In comparison, Toyota Prado and Land Cruiser diffs are rubbish. They break crown and pinion gears far easier than Land Rover diffs.
Land Rover diffs can be made stronger simply by replacing with an ARB locker.
Personally -
Rear - HiTough Rear axles and ARB diff lock
Front - Longfield CV's and axles and ARB diff lock
The Landcruiser diffs should be pretty good. They're a lot better than the Rover ones. I tend to think the reason they break is due to the crush tube that is in the pinion. I suspect that these move too much which causes the failures. The ones with solid spacers in place of the crush tube seem to be really strong. Prado... junk...
Hilux diffs are much stronger than Land Rover. Blind Freddy can see that just by looking at them side by side.
A slunnie said, they need solid spacer instead of the crush tube when used on the front (solid is also good at the rear, but not essential).
Prado front is independant suspension and I haven't had anything to do with them. I don't imagine the prado rear would be too different to hilux.
The only landcruiser that has much trouble with diffs is the 100 series. 80 and 100 series have hilux size front diff, reverse cut for strength in forward direction. But 100 series is 4.3:1 (80s is 4.1:1) and when reversing up steep grade they will break - beacause the drive is on the weak side of the teeth and there is more traction at the front wheels in that case.
Toyota 8" diff centre is a decent strength upgrade for Land Rover diffs.
