How about the 200 Tdi motor?
Mines done close as poo is to swearing 400000K and about to go in for a timing belt. Should I do the head on it as well?

mines just ticked over 310000 on the trip home from cooma..
it is running a little harsher than it was when i bought it but i figured injectors at this mileage,.
what if any symptoms are the giveaway that it is getting near time to do the head gasket?
hmmm wish my back was still a working part of my body...
big ends at 300000 they say, head gasket about then as well as injectors... geez i will need a lotto win to get thru this ! :angel:

so (with regards to things that would make me want to check the head) what Id be doing if I had a tdi is at about the 150K K interval Id take the glow plugs out (at every service) and look at them if they were clean or abnormally eroded or pitted Id be worried and immediately get a gas analasys of the coolant after Id worked it hard (and yes I'd do that with the engine still hot and running at a fair tick).
A coolant sampling will tell you when your starting to get a little blow past the gasket, if your getting more than the acceptable stuff all of emissions in the coolant then its time for the head to come off for investigation. If the heads off its time for a new head gasket. A slightly off head with a slightly off gasket wont work but a slightly off head with a new gasket should work for quite some time, it wont work forever but it should give you enough time to get the dough together to rework the engine properly. The key word there is slightly as in 10.0000001 is slightly more than 10 and a lot less than 11.
Heads have a tolerance limit, In a perfect world the head to block tolerance is 0+/-0 in reality you get a couple of hundreths of a MM to play with or about 1 thou of an inch across the whole block. if your out of tolerance your screwed if your in tolerance you should be ok.
While you can reuse the head bolts from my perspective I advise dont when you have the option to replace them, what happens when you do a gasket or something else that needsthe head removing when your in the field and your head bolts are on the 3rd or 4th go round? If you had new bolts fitted the last time, providing you havent totally cooked it you can reuse the ones you have.
IF i had any indication that the head gasket might not be mickey mouse then it wouldnt take much more to convince me that maybe I should have a look at it and by not much more Im talking in the vicintiy of " well the oil caps off anyway" (ok thats a little bit of an exageration) but IF i had to dismantle anything else that was hanging off of the head for any reason (as stated previously) then the head would be off and the new bolts and gasket in after everything got measured up.
