    Coolant for new Defender

    Distinguished Colleagues,

I want to take some engine coolant with me on my around Oz trip - the manual states I need Texaco XLC (from memory!) It's red coloured - the only place I can get this is from the dealer. They want $159.00 for 5 litres.

Do I need this or is there some other coolant that will suffice?

Aren't Texaco products available at Caltex garages ?

The coolant would be just OAT as far as I can tell. RR & D3 all use the same.

Thanks Scott - but what is OAT?

A quick search reveals that it is Organic Acid Technology coolant.

It's designed to last a lot longer than the gycol coolant. So much so that it's not even listed for a change in the first 100000km.

Texaco LLC is Caltex LLC. It will say "" Long Life Coolant" and "Organic Acid Technology" using "Carboxylate technology" (or chemistry or somesuch) on the container. Same stuff as used in the TD5.

I buy it in 4 litre bottles of concentrate from the nearest Caltex depot, approx $36/ 4 litres.

I know that with the TD5 if you don't use the right coolant you're asking for BIG trouble so you're doing the right thing getting exactly what they specify

your engien uses an OAT coolant as already mentioned

I use the nulon stuff but solong as you dont mix the different types you can use any of the OAT based coolants including

    nulon OAT

    Caterpiller ELC

    caltex LLC

theres a couple of others that might have been mentioned but so far those are the easiest ones to get hold of.
