    Disco s1 V8 Auto towing.??

Hi just asking if anyone has or thinks they know how to turn off the 4 gear locking torque converter from locking in. as i tow a small van and towing in 3rd gear is to low and driving in 4th is to high. but i have notice that when in 4th and my speed gose over 80kph the locking torque converter comes in and my rev's drop by 400. which is to low and my speed drops off as well.
    can anyone help. ??

Id advise against driving with the TC unlocked in 4th for prolonged periods as you will overheat the oil and bake the tranny unlessyou also do something about cooling the oil as well.

it can be done by tickling the brain but thats something best left to the auto guru workshops...

    Matt and Jo,

Welcome to the biggest problem with D1's and towing
There is a real problem with revs and torque, as you have found out.

Fiddling with the torque converter lock is not a wise idea as it is hydraulic and not electric as I first thought. That is why it won't slip out when power is applied, like a Falcon does.

What I do, when pulling the Caravan, is put the auto in third and plant the foot until the car is doing at least 90kph, then put it in drive. If you leave it in drive, the revs don't build up high enough to get into the torque band.
When you hit a hill and the revs die, slip it back to third at 85 - 90 and keep it on 3,000 to 3,500 rpm. I don't take it higher than that because it is not necassary.

Later down the track, I'm going to fit a modified Camshaft to bring the torque down to lower revs.

    Cheers,
    Ron

    Hi
I will be towing a camper shortly. I spoke to a Landy mechanic in Romsey who said it is a good idea to get the transmission modified so that the TC will lock in 3rd. This apparently pretty much solves the problems described above-ie where 3rd with TC unlocked is revving hard but 4th with TC locked wont pull. What are people views on this?
    thanks

Thanks for the feed back. Looks like i will have a chat to the Auto man. About locking it in 3rd gear. Only if the speed limit was 110kph as the disco sit's on that towing with out any trouble.

Maybe Ashtrans can tell you whether its possible on a mechanical control auto.
    Why not PM him?
Have you got bigger tyres on? It wouldn't help if you do.
Another approach would be to fit an interceptor ( Unichip or similar) to the motor as they pick up lots of torque down low and up high.About 20% or so.
I have attached a comparison dyno chart. th eone you want is stage 1. You will see quite a gain with just the Unichip.
