I have an old warn xd9000 with a later 6hp motor in the 300Tdi disco. Duel batteries with drivesafe's sc40 isolator/controller. I wired this up with a solenoid to connect the 2 batteries when winching with the engine running.
Absolutely right.....I found out this the hard way this weekend, even though I can link both battery's the alternator could not keep up. it's an 80 amp job and it took a long time to restore the battsQuote:

On the issue of battery power, at the moment I just have a standand size (450cca) battery on the 12v system as it is just used to run the LPG, car radio and CB. In due course I will replace this battery with two large batteries to power fridges etc - was going to get deep cycle batteries but as these may have to now also power the winch in emergencies when the engine has died (or too lazy to transfer the PTO winch cable from the front to rear or vice versa I need to reconsider they type of battery (with a 101 PTO you can winch from the front or rear - just need to change the direction of the cable).
At full load the electric winch draws 450amps so any recommendations on the type of batteries to buy - they will be in parrallel, powered by their own 120 amp alternator, no battery isolator will be needed, they will be used to mainly power fridges etc and occasionally the winch.
The truck starting system has two 12v batteries in series and is charged by the main 24v alternator - the 12v system and the 24v systems are completely separate.

I see to recall there are a number of people competing in the UK feeding 24volts into the 6hp XP 12v motors with decent results!
Apparently they are good for this and it powers them right up. A lot of people in Aus comps do the same. This said, if on 24v they need to be under load when winching in, and dont power them out using 24v either.Quote:

The 6hp is apparently good with it as long as its loaded up. The solinoids can also be a bit dicky apparently, so many are running the Albright / Tigerz11 type solinoid, passing 24v through to the winch but switching on 12v. Thats all comp stuff though. They're even mounting winch motors onto winch motors and putting 24v through both of them, but thats just the beginning.Quote:
