    Bonnet mount spare

Has anyone ever used a disco rear tyre mount on the bonnet of a Defender? Is it possoble, are there any draw backs?

I know it will be heavy but my unly other option is to mount it on a roof rack, and due to the weight I would prefer not to mount it so high, or on the roof.

    Thanks for any feedback

Is it for the Tdi or Td5? you can still get the kits for the Tdi...bout $300-330 from memory and it's the gen kit...

Have a look at this one :

it's a bit too expensive, but it may give you an idea about making your own.

That French one is neat. I wonder how it would stand up to corrugations.

Re the Disco type, I'm pretty sure it would fall foul of the bullbar laws or ADRS or whatever. Without a wheel the studs would do a pedestrian some serious injury. Apparently the riceburners that have the tachos on the bonnet are caught, so there's no way this would pass.

Just fitting it for a long trip & removing it afterwards might be feasible though.

Its for a TDi, at only $30, I thought it may be a good option. Do you need to mod the bonnet or is that only for a TD5.

all, i bought the opposite lock kit for my trip to the kimberley.
no problems with bonnet strength or cracking of the mounts after 1 month of corrugations. the only issue that popped up was that twice on the trip the bonnet catch let go and i had to re-shut the bonnet. hat was on two large bumps rather than corrugations

    Hi Stu,

Also have the opposite lock kit on my 01 defender. Had a few issues with corrugations and vibrations with wheel and bonnet. Nothing broken after trip to Birdsville area but spent most of the time waiting for the hinges to explode. Have you added any strengthening to stop the vibrating?

    Thanks

Send idletorque a PM he has fitted one to his Defender and is a reasonable job, he may enlighten you.

I think his is off a 110 trayback bonnet as they are standard & I think on 130 single cabs, maybe some one out there will swap a bonnet that has their spare on the tray?
