Intercooler Pipe let go...
Hi guys
I ended up breifly on the side of the freeway last night wondering if i should carry on driving......
launching onto the freeway gave the disco a bit (read heap of) of the loud pedal and suddenly a great big whoomph and cloud of smoke.. i thought it was a tyre it was that loud, but then i realised it was turbo... whistled like hell too once i got back on the throttle. so i stopped.
i managed to blown the first rubber pipe from the steel pipe on the turbo side (the one attached to the turbo not the intercooler) jubilee clip is just rattling around. quick text to landy andy (thanks mate) to see if was ok to drive like that (had just been to an interview and was all togged up) and i limped home2.5krpm was all it would give nothing else... but ran ok under low boost, as it could still blow a bit of air down the tube! sounded awsome too.. i have been griping about not being able to hear the turbo at all... well i could then
My question is.. why? the intercooler must be a hell of bottleneck for the air... unless its blocked... or something else is amiss.. any ideas or is it a common problem? it does look like there is a very fine film of oil on the pipe (assumed leakage from the turbo?) is this normal?
Thanks in advance
Steve

Chances are that the hose has been working its way off for a while. That final big boost popped it off
.
The oil film is normal.
The intercooler can be cleaned out too - there was a thread on here recently about how to & what to use.

Yep oil film normal. The oil vapour comes from the crank case ventilation system, there is a separator thats supposed to drain collected oil from the vapours back into the sump, but some oil mist still gets through. Oops thought you had a 300Tdi, read the post again and is Td5.

We used to occasionally have them pop off after we had replaced the intercooler for customers (pipe to intercooler though, not pipe to turbo).
Yes it does make a big bang as the pressure is released! Thought Id been shot at the first time!!
We now make sure we apply liberal amounts of brake cleaner to the pipe join areas before we put the pipes back on. Touch wood we've not had one blow off since.
Oh yeah, thin film of oil is normal.

Jon

Thanks guys,
im wondering whether it was to do with the intermittent turbo lag (mentioning in the other hose thread) that im having, cant remember but it may of been a case of a whole heap of boost coming on all at once after the delay that blew it off, and as has been hinted they do come off sometimes. i cant remember whether it was laggy on the drive home..
still waiting for the nanocom for some clues, and some time to get some things made (like egr bypass) also need a bit of time to wind the wastegate shut.
Has anyone made an intercooler hose / hoses out of standard 90 / 45 silicon bends? on a disco... not a deefer?
Thanks

I notice you already have TRT's ECU remap. Now remove the EGR Valve and replace with the EGR removal kit that is sold by vendors. Screw up the turbo waste gate fully closed with the engine off. Replace the Land Rover centre muffler with a Vortex muffler.
95% of TD5 Turbo lag will be gone. Made a huge difference to my TD5. It's great to floor the pedal and you just go.

Thanks brad.. they are all on my list to de except the vortex, was gonna go the cheaper straight pipe.. but may try and persuade swmbo..
the turbo lag isnt true lag... it doesnt normally have any it normally reacts almost instantly, its just from time to time (and it happens from startup to shutdown not intermittently during running) while running at say 2000rpm i boot it and it does nothing for a second or so (sounds short but it feels like forever) and then tears my head off with the power it has.. normally i boot it and it reacts instantly with no waiting. the lag is only evident when driving hard when it occurs.
things suggested have been egr (stuck or faulty), wastegate sticking and hoses. so i'll get these sorted as soon as i have time (family have now gone and house renovations take priority!)
Thanks
Steve
