use a square shanked flat head screw drive to jam between the pully bolts and the back of the boss, grab a shifter (or the right size spanner if you happen to have it) put the shifter on and give it alternating whacks with a rubber mallet...
5-6 swings will see it free and having a second person to hold the screwdriver (or the shifter if you dont like them much) helps and in a pinch, if you dont value the fanbelt much you can cinch tie 2 runs of it together tight up onto one of the pullys to hold it all firm.
yes half of your swings will be in the direction of do up but as you're only hitting it softly you wont do any damage and it should pop off after the second swing in the direction of undo. Once its cracked it should just about be finger tight the whole way, before you do it up put some anti sieze on the threads.
Usually undo is in the direction of engine rotation when viewed from the front.

The tool can be had from REPCO for about $35. Ask for a Ford fan hub spanner. It makes it a LOT easier.
An easy way to remember the direction of hitting (and this applies to serpentine or v-belts which, on LRs, are different directions) is to loosen in tha same direction in which the fan rotates.
Leave the fan belt and tensioner all in place until you've loosened it. I find I don't need anything special, the belt tension is enough to hold the pulley when I hit the spanner. I use my big shifter.
Don't Loctite the thing back on. Someone did that on my previous RR.![]()

Thanks Guys, Just about to tackle the water pump on my D1 I hope your tips work out.
I made a spanner from some 4mm steel i had lying around and now keep it in the toolbox just in case.
