Thread: Brake squeal/Three amigos

Hi, There are many reasons for the lights to come on. The most common one seems to be a fault with one of the wheel sensors, well it was on mine last week. Often they just need to be cleaned and pushed back together again.

The incorrrect pads can set the lights off as well. you said you fitted a 2 inch lift?. The sensor cables may have been streched or damaged while you were doing this. Normally a 2 inch lift does not require the extended sensors but worth checking.

Just a thought but have you re tightend the wheel nuts after lowering the car. .

Tightening the wheel nuts was the first thing I did when I pulled over tonight. Also half way on the trip home after fitting the lift kit!

I'll check the cables tomorrow for damage - but the lift kit didnt appear to require any extension of cables, other than what was supplied (a couple of brackets for brake/sls sensors).

After a test drive tonight I'm thinking the brake pads are the culprits for the bad squeal, its just the warning lights and shuddering when I came to a stop (has only done this slightly one more time tonight) thats worrying me now. The squeal is ear splitting when you are outside/close to the car though

I have had the same trouble with my Disco II. I tried Bendix pads in the front and had intemit squeal ( hello three amigos). On every occasion I had to plug into test book to get it reset.
It may be worth while getting the vehicle checked by test book as if the ABS light is on there should be a fault logged. (If it shows the rear it will be highly likely the brake squeal)
I had to go back to original pads and this has fixed the problem.

Double Geeeezzze, just finshed reading your doom a gloom about the oil leak, and here you are again.

Ok, 3 amigos (yes I've been through this). Plenty of stuff on the forum through searching, but most is consolidated in this .pdf attachment (about the 3rd post down) put together 'cos of my issues. It basically summarises the stuff on here and on the web.

Thanks Simon. And thanks for the pdf link - I dont think any of the symptoms listed are exactly as I have, but useful reading anyway.

I can't believe all this is happening two weeks before I go on a trip around the country! It is proving a real hassle actually, and, without wanting to provoke a firestorm, I am beginning to doubt my purchase of a suitable car for this trip.

Anyhow, for now I am doing my best to stay on track and not spend too much on non-essentials. Then its fingers crossed for the trip itself.

Actually I was driving around at lunchtime and everything was fine - no warning lights (the ABS comes on at startup and goes off withing 1-2 seconds, but I think thats normal) - but the squeal is still there; it gets worse as the brakes get warmer and only happens if I brake lightly at slow speed, e.g. rolling up to lights.

And right at the end of my driveabout I was rolling into a parking space, out of gear, with brakes lightly applied, squeal gets louder and louder and then the shuddering happens again - I let off the brake and it stopped immediately. No warning lights at all this time. I am ringing Brakes Plus now for a free safety check As at the moment I dont feel particularly safe!

Will let you know how I get on.

Brakes Plus made a check of the brakes for me and everything was ok - there is a loud squeal, but most likely caused by the new non-genuine rear pads on old discs (they are just roadworthy). I'll live with it for the sake of $370 to fit new discs when I dont need them just yet - and that is almost week's budget when we are away!

They couldnt help with the ABS warning light though (not surprisingly I have to take it to a LR specialist to hook it up to testbook or whatever). So has anybody ever seen/suffered from a shudder at low speed when braking and the ABS or three amigos coming on?

One other thing the Brakes plus guy did mention was squealing brakes causing the sensors to play up - he reckoned they had had heard of this happening. I didnt ask how exactly the squeal affects the ABS sensors, but is it feasible do people reckon?

Oh yep, certainly can, see the 9th reason (second from bottom) on the table in the .pdf I linked earlier.

FYI, After I bought my D2 last Nov, I had new discs fitted all round, mechanic re-used the brake pads (bendix) as they were nearly new. I've had squeeling brakes almost ever since which only now is almost gone. It was when my brakes were squeeling on a drive with corregations/water crossing/dust that my amigos arrived. I actually blamed the mushy brake pedal, but who really knows????????
