    TD5 alternator

    Hi everyone, I am trying to wire up a tachometer/ engine hour gauge for my 130 and the instructions say to use the W terminal on the alternator. However, the alternator is just ahead of the RHS engine mount and below the intake manifold and fuel cooler [I think ] so I can't see how I can connect to the Alternator without removing it and that looks like a tough job.Any suggestions would be welcome. This Tacho needs a stronger signal than pin 19 in the ECU emits, apparently.It has been calibrated to suit the TD5 alternator.Thanks in advance. 130man.

    Yes, Slunnie, it looks like a bugger of a thing to get at.I was hoping someone would have a technique to suggest,such as breaking in to one of the wires already coming out of the alternator, but no such luck. Cheers, 130man.

    I don't have any experience with the TD5.

    If there is an existing wire to the 'W' terminal, then you may be able to break into the loom.

    The colour of the wire from the 'W' terminal on my 300Tdi disco is white with grey stripe. It is likely that the same colour would be used for the same use on other Land Rover models. It is a small diameter wire as the current is low.

    Internally, the 'W' terminal taps into the alternating current before the dc rectifier. If there is no wire from the 'W' terminal, you have no other way to get a tacho signal from the other alternator wires.

    Hello John, thanks for that suggestion. I will check it out later today and let you know. Since I can't actually see the back of the alternator, it is very close to the RHS engine mount, is there any way of determining which wires come from where?My mirror on a stick can't get in the space, so no help there. I couldn't find a picture of the alternator on the Rave CD so I can't even take an intelligent guess at where the wires are coming from.130man.

    Here's a copy of the wiring diagram. Key to three cable colours connected to the alternator are;

    N = brown.
    NY = Brown with yellow stripe.
    WG = White with Green stripe.

    As to which one might be the "w" connection.......you're on your own

    Hello Foz, thanks for that assistance. From under the vehicle I can see three posts on the back of the alternator, two of which I can just access, but I can't see if any of them are labelled W. The upper post has what could be an E near it but the other two [the accessable ones ] are unlabelled as far as I can see.Can anyone refer me to a useful diagram or at least describe which of the posts is the W one? One of the two accessable posts has a Hex/Phillips head screw adjacent to it.Cheers, 130man.
