rangie not started in 14 months!!

mmm, yes. I asked my old man to start the rangie & warm her up every now & then... was not done once

so tomorrow I am going to drop the oil, change oil filter, refill oil with new stuff & put a little in each cylinder & turn her over a bit by hand if I can.

Any other tips or things I should do before I go to turn the key?

    You're kinder than me.

I just charged the battery and hit start.

be on standby for a leaking front main seal and possabley a rear main depending on how nicely its been treated in the past.

Id suggest disabling the ignition system/fuel cut off on the diesels and cranking it on the starter till it gets oil pressure (oil light goes out on the dash) then give it a start.

IT wouldnt hurt to drain off some of the fuel from the tank(read most), mix up 20l of fresh fuel with injector cleaner/dewatering agent/octane enhancer and tip that into the fuel tank prior to start up.

    G`day ,

probably depends which RR it is as to a plan of action .

The main concern will be if the oil pump has lost prime and if the pump is cam driven , if it is it will need some jelly placed inside the pump to regain prime . If it`s a crank driven pump and lost prime you may have wind it on the key or listen to it rattle for very short periods till it primes itself .

If it`s injected and when looking for prime you have to wind it over on the key or for any other reason for any length of time it may pay to disable the injection ( pull relay ) so`s when you try to start it`s not flooded .

If it were me i would start it and then change the oil because if it is a cam driven pump when you drain the oil there is a good chance if the pump had any chance of still having prime that would be lost .

Depending on the amount of fuel in the tank ...if it`s injected and not alot in the tank i`d add some to whats there to try to get a part fresh mix .
I`d then take the fuel pipe of the rail , if it`s still holding pressure i`d be surprised , this will drain any fuel out of the rail , Then i`d use the key to get about a 1/2 a ltr of fuel out the pipe , it`ll be pumping the fresher stuff from the tank by then .

You don`t need to rotate the engine to do this , just cycle the key as in turn the ignition on and off without hitting crank . The pump will only run for a short while which is normal . It only pumps continuous when the key is at crank or the engine is running .
Coarse if you`ve got naked fuel around you don`t want sparks , so disable the spark .

If it lacks compression oil down the holes but other wise not .

What i`d do is as Slunnie suggests and at the same time check for oil pressure as Dave suggest and if it starts and has pressure then after it has warmed up , I`d change the oil and if it won`t start or doesn`t have pressure i`d do the bit that i suggested and if it has carbs same for the oil pump , fuel ( other than the pump working ) .

    Cheers
