Am I missing something here - why do you need to go to a dealer to buy oil? Why not as mentioned - go to any auto spare parts shop.

I do not know anyone who gets their oils from a dealer unless the car is being serviced there - indeed my local dealer does not sell oil unless the car is being serviced.

    Hi Garry,

In the UK, When i bought all the service items from the dealer I could also buy oil. It came in Land Rover 5l containers. I hadnt realised it wouldnt be the same over here so was suprised and asking the question!

Now I know, I will do.

    Cheers

    Oils Aint Oils

When my Disco was still under warranty it was serviced at two different LR country Dealers who both used semi-synthetic oil. Their reasoning was that it gets changed at 10,000 klms any way. The dealer in Karratha when it was still going used full synthetic castrol but still reccomended it chaged at 10,000klms.

I have just changed mine last Sunday and used an oil by another Australian company called PMLubricants, PM Enviro TurboLife SHPD SAE 15W40
I learned of them through a oil thread on this site and have bought their product to try out. They recomended the 15W40 due to the climate here in Karratha (Does not snow)

I personally don't hold much faith in the stealers when it comes to oils. The dealer that sold me the car, thankfully closed down now, serviced the td5 and put 15w 40 in it. When I questioned them they told me that in Oz, where it is hotter, 15w 40 is fine. Yeah, right, like LR never took a td5 out of the UK to test it. And they put the oil grade in bold in the manual with "Warning only use grade 5w oil in this vehicle" as a laugh. Anyway I had to dump the oil and put the right stuff in it (Penrite HPR5) at my expense.

No wurries - as I questioned - was I missing something and that explains it - a clash of cultures.
