    Digital calipers?

OK, just after recommendations for makes here. I don't need super accurancy (These are for rifle and pistol reloading, not engineering measurements) but having just had my second eBay set screw up on me, I'm tired of buying cheap rubbish.

A quick Google shows Mitutoyo around the $200-220 mark, with Moore & Wright (Who had a very good reputation back in the analogue dial caliper days but I've never seen or used their digital stuff) around $165 and the likes of Sidchrome and Kinchrome around the $100 mark for comparable 150mm units.

So, experiences and thoughts welcome please. I'll pay what I need to for reliability as the latest pair screwing up has just stopped me finishing my reloading today and hence stopped me going shooting.

Oh, and while I'm going on about tools, can anyone recommend a torque screwdriver (Ideally with the interchangeable hex type heads), which is again for the guns, and finally a decent mid-range make of a 1/2" torque wrench for the cars?!

Starrett, and Brown and Sharpe are very, very, good but very, very, expensive. Better than Mitutoyo. Too good for your purposes. These are precision machinist's tools. Starrett 6"/150mm have a US list price of US$180, & US$240 with carbide faces. Add freight, duty, GST and exchange rate and commission to this plus an Australian dealers usual exorbitant profit margin and you could at least double those figures in A$. They also do them with electronic output to a data logger, CNC, or computer. Cost more again. Chinese and Indian ones would be good enough for your purpose and should cost no more than A$40-45.

We had 2 pair of the Kincrome ones...

Worked perfectly (and still are) and were used all day every day for years...

    Paid around $98.00 set IIRC

I bought a set from Electus (Jaycar) and they have been good.

Not sure if these are exactly the same as mine. Picture looks a little different in the screen/case/button area.

I've had them for nearly 2 years. They are flashing to tell me I need to replace the battery but otherwise they are fine.

Thanks all. Think I'll go for a midrange pair for the reloading bench, and probably treat myself to a good pair for the workshop too, so I have a backup if I get a repeat of today's issue.

I can get the kingchrome ones from our local tools supplier (decked me out with my taxpayers funded toolkit) and I get them at a bit of a discount over retail. and ditto for the torque wrenches in 1/4 3/8 1/2 and 3/4 inch drives. Havent yet asked about a torque screwdriver but If the interest is there send me a PM and I'll track a set down.

I have a Mitutoyo CombiMike mechanical digital micrometer not calipers. Had it for years. Very good. Would they do what you want?

I do actually need a mic as well (and a dial gauge!). Just wasn't considering the fact I'd have to buy new calipers first though.

For the mic, I certainly won't be buying a digital, but that one looks interesting as a good compromise.
