Without proper diagnosis you'll be lucky to find the problem if it's not in a connector.
The clockspring/spiral cassette under the steering wheel is not an unknown problem.

is it one of those "due for replacement" models. i remember reading on one of these forums about the d1's having a 5 or 10 year service life on the airbags. is this correct?

I doubt that age would be the problem. The airbag itself might be the problem but it's fairly rare in my experience. Diagnosistics would point you in the right direction though.
You can removed the centre console & check the connection at the DCU. Remove the column shroud to check the steering column wiring & remove the passenger airbag to check the connection there.

The airbags originally had a 10 year life span but that's now revised to 15 years. It's likely to be made 20 years soon.

On a D2 the usual problem is the plug under the seats wich is the sensor to let the computer know if there is an occupant in the seat.Its normaly the drivers as that chair gets used/adjusted most that causes the problem in a D2.
See if the D1 has a yellow wire(SRS code) connector under the front seats,unplug and clean with CRC or contact cleaner and replug.

Andy, that harness is for the seat belt pre-tensioner. You are correct though - poor connections there are common but the D1 doesn't have pre-tensioners.

Besides, I don't think the D2 is intelligent enough to not trigger the airbag in the unoccupied seat .
