Question when is a knock sensor necessary?

was woundering if there is any one or any were there is info on knox sensers I have a 3.9ltr RR 1990 and have no idea if the 3.9 has knox sensors or wether you can add them or were they mite be and if there are some are there enough sensers to convert or do i have to add more to change the injector firing order from a bank system to a sequential system as others have said in this forum you can get the ecu to do it but as i can gather from the info they use knox sensers.

Better yet if some one has done this conversion I would welcome your advice and any info on this topic

Any help would be great thanks.

I don't think knock sensors were added to the V8 until the 4.0/4.6 cross-bolted blocks.

They are fitted one on each bank, about 1/2 way back and 1/2 way up the side of the block.

I could take some pics of my spare engine tomorrow if you like.

I wonder if there is a enough casting thickness on an earlier block to add them?

knock sensors dont need to be integral to the block, as in having a hole drilled and threaded, you can get away with brazing a pipe fitting onto the block and then threading the sensor into that.

So in the case of having to add them, where on the engine would be the ideal location? block? head? near cylinder? between 2?

Why not the location LR used on the later V8s?
