    300Tdi Timing Belt tension

Yes I know its been covered before, but the main site for the correct tension settings (Difflock.com) doesn't seem to be working.

I know this was revised down from the value in the manual/RAVE but I can't find the TSB that covers this and need the correct tension.

    Anyone know what it is?

    Looks like 11Nm MAXIMUM.

If you look in here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/common-thr...ming-belt.html there is a thread here Timing belt destruction....

    a) The timing belt tension has changed from that published in the Workshop Manual. The new method is as follows, it is essential that this procedure is adhered to precisely:

    b) ...

    f) Using a dial type torque meter with a maximum length of 250 mm apply a torque of 11 Nm with the torque meter positioned vertically as shown, (illustration .

    g) Tighten the tensioner locking bolt to 45 Nm.

    h) ...

    Hi again Rick,

About this "dial type torque meter with a maximum length of 250 mm" that everyone surely has in their tool kit: Would you think a socket t-bar, held vertically, with a suitable spring balance applied at right-angles at exactly 250mm from the bolt centre, would do the job? I calculate 4.49 kgf at a 250mm radius would give 11Nm, so a 5kg spring balance should be reasonably accurate for this force?

Thanks for the oil test info on the other thread too.

In the Difflock 'How To' that is offline ATM they just suggest just to use a normal deflecting beam tension wrench and be very careful with it, that's all I use and I'm sure that's what most Land Rover workshops use (after having talked to a Service Manager one day on what 'special' tools they used, I think I had more than they did )
IIRC I just used my 1/4"drive W&B one as its scale goes from 3-20Nm.

Dial type ones cost the earth.....

    Thanks all

Rick, I'd looked through that thread but could not see a mention of the torque. More proof I'm getting old!

wasnt there a TSB that raised the spring setting to 14nm over 11?

Dave, now your just confusing me...

I thought the TSB was to drop it from 15Nm to 11Nm for a new belt

Im running from memory but then I dont refit old timing belts IF Ive got the bugger off a new one goes on.

I dont have acess to the TSB's on a regular basis

I thought the tsb raised the new belt tension but left the old belt tension as was.

    Yes, you're right

    ................
    e) Lightly tighten the tensioner locking screw then back off one full turn.
Ensure tensioner is free to move.
    f) Using a dial type torque meter with
a maximum length of 250 mm
apply a torque of 11 Nm with the
    torque meter positioned vertically
    as shown, (illustration .
    g) Tighten the tensioner locking bolt
    to 45 Nm.
    h) Tighten the injection pump pulley
    fixings to 25 Nm.
    i) Remove timing pins.
It is no longer a requirement to rotate
the engine and repeat the tensioning
    procedure.
    the TSB is dated 25/3/98
