It's gone soft and needs 9 thou off to make it usable, that's too much from what I've been told, most are also sceptical about retreating the head to re-harden it.

Yesterday i sourced a secondhand head that's been checked and surfaced from Vic for $1600 with 130,000ks on the car, that's a good price after calling around.

Baz do you have any thoughts as to why it went soft eg overheated or use of non red oat? I thought I'd read something by you about paying for not using OAT somewhere on here.
    Cheers

I went a couple of years not using OAT, but i think what killed it, was the amount of times it over heated coming home from a weekend away

    Head Gasket

i'm by far no expert but when I read your story, sounds almost exactly word for word, like my own experience a few months ago. Very frustrating. For me it was the head gasket and about 3 grand later it was fixed.... I won't go into the other few things that followed ........ which were apparently unrelated. I've persisted with my ol girl though (2000 TD5) and we're still friends, but its been a frustrating road we've driven at times.

Good luck and make sure you go to a well known Land Rover mechanic, if your not sure, ask this forum as there is such a wealth of experience and good will here. Having a LR mechanic that knows what they're doing make all the difference to the work done and a fair price, as well as back up service. Unfortunately I had to get my gasket done by a LR dealer due to the timeframe and my normal mechanic being booked out for months, it was my biggest mistake.

    wish you the best.

In my opinion down to them being overheated.
