A question for the Transfer case specialists?
I noticed a vibration coming from the front propeller shaft, but upon inspection the shaft was quite OK with no problems in the universals or slip joint.
Looking further, considerable lateral movement was noticed in the front output flange which seemed to indicate that there was wear in the front output Flange Bearing....... Fortunately the seal is not leaking yet.
The main question is:
Can the front output shaft bearing be replaced without removal of the transfer case?
Can it be simply removed from the front of the housing after the mud sheild, seal and circlip has been removed? And if so, then a new bearing and seal be installed in the reverse manner?
Eagerly awaiting a reply on this one as it will mean the difference between a simple repair job or the end of my bank account.

Yes to all you can do this fairly easy as long as its only the front bearing that is biggered tho it may just be a loose retaining nut in the front output you will need to drop the box end of the front shaft to inspect id do this and check to see if the nut is still tight as it may be all thats wrong tho you may have a shot bearing get under and have a go and you will find out

It very possibly could be just that. I have found the same problem in an old Series III Landrover and it was just the shaft nut that was causing the problem.

Yep no probs i hope for your sake its only a lose nut heres a pic of the front housing and the front shaft just to see what it looks like may be of help may not either way have a look

My Borg Warner transfer has had lateral movement ever since I bought the car 8 1/2 years ago. They all seem to have it.
I was worried at first but thought that it could only get worse, but it never did.
I would be looking at the UJs again.

A little different to the 91 model behind the 3.9 litre but remarkably similar in design.
I was unsure whether or not the bearing if worn out after 350K was removeable from the front of the housing with the vehicle on a hoist as I got some rubbish from one of the 4X4 workshops that they had to remove the transfer case but it didn't seem right to me as the shaft was removeable and the bearing had to come out with the shaft. A simple job with the right puller it seemed.... Just a matter of removing the flange and seal, then the circlip and the whole lot should come out of the housing from the front with no major dramas.. All based on simple observation of the workshop manual and the spare parts diagram. Beats me where they got the idea that the transfer case had to come out???????
Anyway, the firs job is to drop the prop shaft and check the nut and then take it all from there.
