    TD5 defender drive flanges

I have rear worn drive flanges in my 2000 defender(170,000 k.) It has been suggested to me that I weld the flange to the axle. I have had a look at previous posts and found only one example and that had failed. An ex L.R. dealer advised me to disconnect the battery, place the earth on the axle/drive flange and weld it. He said he has done heaps and had no problems. What I thought I might do is jack the wheel up, turn the wheel so that the splines are in contact in the forward direction, tack it with the axle & drive flange in place so that it is true with the diff centre. Then remove the axle & flange pre heat the flange & axle end, then mig it on the outside. Wait till it cools the machine drive flange face true to the axle. I have concerns for the electrics E.C.U. ect
    Any comments please. Thanks

I really dont like the sound of welding them up to be honest but if you do.

Disconnect the battery and the 10as unit.

Land Rover say only the battery as far as I recall but the 10as unit doesnt like welding and most probably will not work afterwards.

    Cheers
    Peter.

umm not sure that i would weld them up, yes if i was in the middle of nowhere and had no other option. i am guessing they are a floating? axle for a reason. buy some orginals back in or if you have the spare $$$ get some maxi (cannot remember the new name) axles in

re: welding, i have never disconnected the battery when i have welded on cars, so long as the earth cable is close to the electrode as possible i believe it will not be an issue

poke your head into an exhaust fitter workshop and lok at the amount of cars they turn over in a day......i have never seen them disconnect a battery

So the Defender has separate axles and drive flanges on the rear?

Would it be possible to fit Discovery 24 spline axles which come with the drive flange on the end as a one piece unit?

D90 also has one piece rear shafts so don't see why not. Guess it would need a rover type diff not the Salisbury however and I think the 2 part ones are probably stronger....

AntiZap on the battery(ies) is enough...

I've never disconnected anything in the vehicle to weld, just used the antizap on the terminals.

    Tombie2,

Fair play regarding the welding but I know of a number of td5s in the UK who have had issues with the 10as unit failing after having being mig welded.

For the sake of 5 miutes to disconnect stuff is it really worth risking wrecking it!?

If I ever do any on mine I diconnect stuff.

    Pete
