it may not be rings it might just be the valve stem seals. a compression/leakdown test will confirm this either way.
Hey guys.
I've got a series 2 Discovery, V8, 2000 model. (230,000k's)
Of late i have noticed that it seems to be blowing fine black smoke (not like a diesel) when running on petrol. on gas it seems fine. it has also slowly been chewing through engine oil... i would say approx 500mL litre every 8,000k's ?? i have also noticed wihin the last 6 or so months that it has been blowing a small amount of oil into the airbox via the rocker cover breather aswell.
All these things lead me to believe that the rings are on thier way out and i'm getting blow-by past the pistons?? Any ideas? anyone had this problem before? Any ideas on what it would cost to fix?
Thanks Guys

500ML in 8000Ks??????
That is a beauty.
It has a long way to go yet before it is terminal.
The blow by may be from a failed head gasket pressurising the valley by leaking from a cylinder into the valley.
I would think that you may have a head gasket leak plus wear in the valve guides.
I think it would be unusual to have such low oil consumption with dead rings, as I would expect that the oil rings would be as worn as the compression rings, although its not always the case.
A compression check /leakdown test may give a clearer answer, but with 230K the valves are going to leak. If it shows a cylinder well down, it will indicate a blown head gasket into the valley.

I agree with Philip. 500ml in 8000km is very good.
When you say black smoke only on petrol, not on LPG, that leads me to think it's running rich.
Rich running on LPG doesn't give smoke. If it was an oil issue, I'd expect it on petrol and LPG. Oil burning normally gives blue-grey smoke.
When the LPG was fitted did they move the breather upstream of the air filter and MAF sensor? If so, I'd say "tsk, tsk!"

No they moved the breather into the Airbox.... Would it be better upstream ?? Just thinking..... it's a venturi system will have to check if there is room past this ??
I did think of it potentially running rich as it using more fuel than i would expect and also it's a bit rough on idle, but have been assuming the worst
With the valve issue any idea on ballpark costs to get these adjusted ??
