Borg Warner T/F case Chain & Gears - Rangie 91 Classic

Two questions guys, if I may?
Replacement parts, either new or used. - Any ideas on prices and the best places to purchase the parts needed to overhaul the T/F case.

Q2. Can the Chain and gears be replaced from under the vehicle without removal of the transfer case?
    Many thanks,
    Shirley.....

    Hello Shirley
Have a look at this post

    and 95 classic drive train
in answer to your question i dont think u can do it without taking it off the vehicle.
You can remove both the rear output shaft housing and front output shaft housing (this one has the viscous).
Ashcroft transmissions in the uk have the bits and from memory you can buy the chains from America cheaper.
I was quoted app 600 for the chain and 900 for the viscous and 300 for the main shaft here in perth. I was lucky to find a low k one from a landy repairer and stripped it down and checked it all before putting in. If the transfer case has done more than 200k I am sure that the chain will be stretched and it may well be scraping on the inside of the case. You will also have the shaft splines worn on the main shaft.
The hardest part is removing the complete assy from the vehicle. Taking it all apart took me about 10 mins My viscous was ok on my original box but I used the low k one as it had done less work. My transfer case did not really make any strange noises apart from a whooshing sound when I backed off the acc pedal. This was the chain scraping on the inside, but it had always done it from when I aquired the vehicle with 214k on the clock It now has 360k and I have just done all of the above a few weeks ago.
I would be looking on ebay for another to recon while I can still drive my rangie and then do a swap in the one day. you can pick them up for as low as 200 bucks as nobody wants them. I like mine as its quiet and its never let me down offroad.

    Hi Brad,
I just sourced a Low Kms T/F Case for $1100.00 but that is a lot more than I wanted to spend.
My biggest problem is the unfamilliarity of the Borg Warner T/F case, I have never had anything to do with one and have been tainted by the stress of haveing to remove a 73 model box up through the floor.
I am hoping that the Transfer case can be changed over from under the vehicle without too much trouble but due to age and health, will have to get a shop to do the work.
Anyway, if I can get as much info as possible it may help in making the right decisions on which way to go with what may become a major headache if the thing breaks.
    Cheers,
    Shirley....

Yes comes from underneath but u do have to lower the motor/ transmission down at the rear to clear the rear floor as the trans case will hit it. I tried to do it by not lowering but there is no way it will come off the gearbox shaft. The 2 rear trans mounts must be removed from the chassis but its not hard just time consuming. You will need a helper as well to balance it on a trolly jack if you do it that way laying on your back as I did!
But on a hoist would be much better.
$1100 for a low k one sounds ok but how low k's?
I was able to dissasemble mine to see how good or bad it was before I refitted it.

About 170K Brad which seemed to be OK to me, about 1/2 worn or less depending in the way it was driven hey?
Thanks Buddy, you are a great help, honestly.
    Much appreciated,

    Hi Brad,
From looking at the photos of the Borg Warner T/F Case it seems that the back half of the case can be dropped off after removing the handbrake, then just change the sprockets and chain if the splines are OK?
    Yes or No? Luv...
    Best wishes,
    Shirley....

    Shirley....

I too, am asking the same question
My rangie has 290 k's / same trans box / will need to fix it

I am planning a 10 day 4wd trek in March 09 & am upgrading all the sus parts
The last thing i want is the TF to go

It also struck me, is it possible to split the casing
change sprockets / chain / viscos
with out having to pull out the box from under the car (leave it still attached)

Sooo, is it something that can be done, or is it just not the done thing????

you can do it without dropping the whole thing out but trust me dont...

remove your fan shroud, drop off the fan then do whats needed to lower the whole tail end of the gearbox and remove the Tcase its made easier if you pop the viscous assembly and parkbrake assembly off of the tcase before you start to try to man handle it as it will balance nicely and weighs a lot less.

manouvering the bits around while laying on your back juggling the chain and the gears and rotating bits to get alignments its achievable but its a pain.

taking the front end off doesnt make it hugely ligher but it does give you a hole you can get a really good grip on
