    Dual Battery Strangeness

Yesterday I stuck the key in the D2, it turned over fine but I bumped the key mid crank and when I went to restart it NOTHING....and I mean dash lights dimming, door locks not going up or down, interior light wobbling.....

The meter off the second batt said 11.5, then went blank as i cranked it!

So, what I did was run jumper leads Neg and pos from second batt to main, left it for a minute, bang, burst into life no problems.

The main Battery is about 18months old.

Second batt is NOT connected to anything. I am waiting to get second fuel tanks in to run wiring.

    It's connected through a SC80 dual relay.

Then, today, when i started it in the morning, NO problem except second battery was pulling 13.9 volts for about 20 minutes then dropped back to 13.3.

Would the SC80 be not disconnecting the main from the second battery and allowing all the main to drain into a faulty second batto!

    What do yous reckon.

Hi mrapocalypse, Just quick answer for now as I’m about to go out but even if your second battery is stuffed, it will only pull your main battery down to 12v and then isolate it.

The thing is though, if the auxiliary battery was stuffed you could not have started you vehicle at all as both batteries would be flat.

It looks like the SC80 has done it’s job and in this case protected your auxiliary battery.

The SC80’s protection does work both ways.

    Cheers.

I doubt if the SC80 is not disconnecting, but you may way to test it.

If they were both connected then they would equalise at the same level.

I would think that it is more likely to be loose/dirty battery terminals or maybe (unlikely after 18 months) the main battery has a fault - and your local battery guy can test that

Definitely go thru your terminals and earth points.
I have a recent thread about a no-go, it was poor earthing yet when I had pulled the earths to check them they were shiny metal and no corrosion at all.
