TD5 Exhaust manifold failure

I have repaired many of these. I mean MANY.

I would say that it is closer to 60/40 chipped /unchipped, but it also depends hugely on how the vehicle is treated.

I did 2 unchipped ones in the last month, 1 Disco, 1 Defender. The D2 had a failure TOTALLY due to the studs being not torqued correctly after a head was replaced under warranty some time ago....3 had fallen out and the rest were loose. Interestingly, the manifold WAS warped 2 to 3 mm also.

its been running those temps for the last 3 years without any problem that peak it the hottest it gets flat road no head wind at 100ks it sits on 425c most of the time

mines done 80k, an did lots of towing erly in its life, an long distence trips, now i have it an only dose 4wding no towing, an as far no probs, an never had a oil leak:wasntme:, touch wood

That's like saying "smoked for fifty years, still breathing".
It's still a very good idea to give up smoking.

One thing that I have found now with the EGT monitor, I find myself driving off the EGTs and what has happened is, the fuel economy has gotten a lot better, I'm talking nearly 100ks extra from a tank and now constantly around the 10.5l/100k driving to and from work:D

I wouldn't be without one now, 723C is the most I've seen on mine, my probe is before the turbo at the EGR inlet on the manifold.

Perhaps only "mechanicy" LR people use AULRO so we tend to see more faults reported and more modded Landies :)

Problem is these days motors are desigend with very fine tolerances and generally as much power as possible is extracted from them, especially if tweaked. Lots of people have criticised Toyota for the output of their TdV8 but maybe more conservative fuelling will lead to greater longevity.

Used to be you could overheat a motor and get away with no significant damage but not any more.

Still, at the moment I love the grunt that I get out of mine and wouldn't swap it for anything, until the next time it breaks of course! :cool:

Toyota - "conservative" - then why are these engines falling apart everwhere? Most local mining companies are now giving up on Toyota's and going to more reliable and cheaper 4wd's.

My exhaust gasket has just gone again and I was talking to the mob who do my servicing and he was telling me that he had a couple of manifolds crack that had been slotted. They had been modified elsewhere.
What he does is he drills a 3/8 hole in the center of the webs and also opens out the mounting holes a fraction except for the center which are basically used as a dowell. New studs also go in. This allows the manifold to move slightly. Claims that since this has been done there have not been any more problems with the manifolds. - Yet!!! Says been doing them this way for about seven or so years.They are also refaced. Whether he is pulling the wool or not I do not know. However, have been dealing with him for years and does not appear to have a forked tongue. Therefore I don't think so.
Mine is going to be done on Thursday so we will see.
