    No Problems as yet

    2003 Disco TD5, ECU Remapped at 66,000, EGR VALVE removed and turbo boost wound up.

    Serious heavy towing when the van goes out at 2,500 kg on the back. Now have 89,000 on the clock - had to swap out both engine mounts as they had collapsed and all 4 shocks but no problem yet with the exhaust manifold and I hope none to come.....

    I've kind of realised that the problem with this poll is there may be more chipped td5's than non-chipped these days. You really need to know that before you can read too much into the results of the poll

    mine went at about 100k engine is not chipped, manifold had 4mm warp when it was machined, now it has 8mm studs from a nissan rb30 they were not that hard to fit and hopefully will do the trick

    Regardless of the numbers it shows that the higher EGT,s associated with chipping play some part in the life span of the manifold. TD5's have kept a lot of LR mechanics cash flow looking healthy for some years now hey.
    Touch wood the wifes has been sort of reliable over the years, but the TD5 is by far not on my most favorite engine list


    To all thanks for the input in the poll, the outcome did not surprise.

    I think that similar problems are encountered with a lot of modern Td engines, not just the Td5.

    Problem is these days motors are desigend with very fine tolerances and generally as much power as possible is extracted from them, especially if tweaked. Lots of people have criticised Toyota for the output of their TdV8 but maybe more conservative fuelling will lead to greater longevity.

    Used to be you could overheat a motor and get away with no significant damage but not any more.

    Still, at the moment I love the grunt that I get out of mine and wouldn't swap it for anything, until the next time it breaks of course!

    Hang on... but the poll result was 9 chipped to 4 unchipped. That means that the proportion was roughly 2/3 chipped. However my point is that maybe 2/3 of the people on the site have their car chipped then you have no greater chance of blowing them whether a car is chipped or not.

    I'm afraid without knowing what proportion of TD5's that are and aren't chipped this poll doesn't tell us anything. I might do a poll about this when the site is running faster for my curiosity.

    I agree, that was what I didn't explain very well in my earlier post.

    Ouch. You sure it's only 2.5 tonnes? That damage seems pretty extreme for weights that are 1 tonne below max.

    I thought that I would add to this old post as I believe it’s may be of benefit to new forum members etc.

    I was originally looking around for a second-hand manifold so I could mount my EGR and put one of the heat treatment coatings on the manifold.

    So doing a bit of research and found the thread on stud failure. Given I have a chipped motor and no EGR and do a few extended driving (8 hours) high speed and having doe 122K’s.

    I’m now thinking this is a preventative must do rather than may do.

    So wouldn’t mind hearing from Tombie2 and others on how their fix is holding up.

    Given I had my head replaced by LR at about 35K’s and my studs are fine I’m thinking there is no need for me to go to the bigger studs. Appreciate any comments.

    Also on the thermal/ceramic inner and outer coatings would appreciate any comments on the benefits and in particular any decrease in under bonnet temperature.

    And any places in Sydney that you would recommend having the work on the manifold done.

    Just do what Tombie did and you wont ever have a problem again mine went at 90k then at 123k got it fixed and chiped it went again at 132k and again at 148k did what Tombie did sloted the webing betwine the ports and now up to 268k and going like a train still to get coated
    Fitted one of those EGT gauges temp tops 847c up big hill flat out on a hot day EGT is fitted before turbo you casn lose 200c through the turbo so its only 647c after so should be all OK
