How do you tell if it is still your gearbox

Yes the diesel shift points would be much lower, and if it is hanging in first the problem is almost certainly the governor at the back of the transmission sticking, which means they did not renew it .
I am assuming a 4HP22 with a kickdown cable not an electronic.

The electronic does the same.

Hi,

if it's holding 1st gear when cold first thing in the morning, then once shifted it's fine all day this is the govenor valve sticking, if you are having to rev it hard to get it to shift up every time then the kickdown cable is too tight,

if you want to check the box code :

if it's the early 'non fly by wire' engine the box code should be 1043 010 744
if the later 'fly by wire' engine this should be 1043 010 748

this is the second number down on the ID plate on the left hand side,

Thanks Dave, I havn't had time to get the Disco back to the shop yet. When I told them they said that they had an additive to solve the problem and to drop in back. I assume the govenor valve is an internal part which would require a strip down again?

Seems to me that if your mechanic is solving your problems with additives you've found your problem.:twisted:

Agreed

unless hes reccomending it as a "keep you out of trouble for now but it will still want proper attention shortly" fix if you desperately need the vehicle to last a couple more weeks before you lay it up.

the addatives that fix stuff like seals fix problems short term but make them worse when they fail again (and they almost always do) OR at the minimum make life harder when you goto do the proper repair job.
