    TD5 clutch flare!!!

so i went for a drive up to zigzag railway with the trailer on for a run, this was sunday b4 last. no probs at all day.
next day i took the 90 to work( work ute had a dead battery) thought i felt it slip ignored it, about 10 am i took the 90 home to replace the battery in the ute. every time i get to 4th and excellerate the way i would normally she flares like there is no to morra!!!

now the 90 only has 62 000 on the clock and has had 1 clutch already replace at 27 000 under warrenty, but LR wont warrent it this time (out of warrenty and way to moddified!)

so would the power of tombies hot chip be enough to cause trouble or is there something else to look for?

either way im gonna have to rip the box out and look for myself...

    cheers phil

I know its a totally different vehicle but even my tweaked, boosted, intercooled, EGT'd 200Tdi started to destroy the clutch and gearbox. Plently of flare when towing especially.

So I'd say a tweaked Td5 would certainly have the capacity to destroy clutches much more quickly, although 35,000km isn't very much.

I wouldn't blame the tweak necessarily, mine is tweaked and though I had the clutch changed as a precaution when the gearbox was done at 170,000km it didn't really need it.

Don't mean to be rude but could be the way you drive? Do you rest your foot on the clutch pedal all the time?

i do drive hard and fast (in anything) but iam very mechanically simpathetic, i rarely slip the clutch and then its only offroad.
it hurts me to ride a clutch and or brakes

Sounds like the flywheel rubber has come apart...happens on TD5, some reason 90s do it more then 110 or 130's.
The chip upgrade shouldnt effect the flywheel that much.

Can you tell me what you mean by "flare"?

We might be having this issue on our TDi 300 Disco - sometimes it just revs a bit like an auto and then the revs go back again. NO foot on the clutch. Seems like a momentary slip.

Took it to a LR mechanic as we though the clutch was slipping but they say no. Tried it in 4th with the handbrake on and the engine always stalls.

Is the clutch on its way out? It is 12 years old - original clutch - lowish Kms but farm work with trailers etc.

    Thanks
    David

Phil when it happens, if you back off the throttle does the clutch pick up again (ie) does it stop slipping

I don't know if you remember me saying mine was doing this a couple of years back, it would only happen when it was cold/first thing in the morning.

Mine cured itself though, although it wasn't long after that i had the leaks in the transfer case fixed, could it be oil or fluid seeping onto the clutch/pressure plate.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

So a new clutch will fix it?
