For the record My Stage 1 has its original wheel bearings after 27 years and yes they are oil lubed and to my knowledge they have never been removed.

I've just got back in after putting maxi axles and drive flanges, completely transformed the vehicle - no drive backlash any more.

Converted the hubs (rear only atm) to oil, simple job took probably 90min per side including removing stub axles and taking out the seal.

With my old range rover (pre defender) I did close on 500000km on the one set of bearings, just the occasional adjustment.

I swapped some disco 24 spline axles into my rangie a couple of months back. It looks like one of the front rubber caps has just taken a dump. Either that or a dog that drinks diff-oil has just pee'd on my front wheel.
