arb non-winch bar on d2- recovery points

on the front of my bullbar, there are 2 eyelets. are these recovery points? there aren't any other places on the front of the car for attaching a tow rope/snatch strap. and is the arb tow bar ok as a rear recovery point? using the empty square tube and its pin.

I don't have a D2 but know the eyelets you mean.
Firstly ARB if you ring them will say "the bulbar is not designed to be snatched or winched from".
I've seen them used for snatching but the only problem with them is you need to use a shackle to attach the snatch strap ( or winch cable ). This creates the possiblity of a very nice missile hitting the back of the snatch vehicle or a person nearby.
I've also seen photos where the shackle has pulled right through the steel eyelet.
If I were forced to use them I'd use a bridle ( a tree protector strap ) and use both points.
The ideal solution is to not use the bullbar at all and get some proper recovery points that bolt on to the chassis.
Yes, the tow hitch is Ok to use for snatching. Just make sure it is mounted with high tensile bolts. You just push the snatch strap end into the receiver and put the pin through. Some people claim this can bend the pin, making it hard to remove, but i've never seen that happen. Some like those receiver inserts with the recovery hooks bolted on to them. They'd be Ok but look a little dangerous - would be good shin or knee scrapers I reckon !

Not sure about the ARB bullbar eyelets. I have been guaranteed by TJM that the eyelets on their steel bars are good for recoveries, but still recomend the use of an equaliser bridle to distribute forces. Snatching from the pin inside the square box of your towpack is a common practice. Even better is to get a hitch receiver block with a rated 4.7t shackle attached.

They are recovery points on the bar. As I undertand it, the reason why ARB started saying they are not recovery points is because of some people were stupid with their recoverys and came to grief, something that was outside of ARB's control.

I had a D2 with a TJM bar and my recollection was that you should not snatch off a bar that was built for air-bag compatability. Not sure how this applies to the ARB bar.

There is no problem snatching from correct recovery points attached to a D2 bullbar. Being an airbag car makes no differance. Its an urban legend. If anyone says you cant ask them why you can fit a winch bar to the vehicle. Winching up an obstacle and suddenly having no load then load is more shock loading than a snatch.

If your concerned aout it you could always fit some after market recover points. I have the 4x4intelligence.com.au ones. VERY STRONG!! And not too hard to fit yourself...
