    R380 Gearbox Cooler Fittings

Does anyone know the size of these? M12 or 1/2ich? and what thread pitch?

I've tried to replace the oil lines today, requiring 2 x barbed fittings to enter into the gearbox to suit the new gearbox cooler, required so I can get the solid oil lines out of the way for my Highmount (which is almost in the radiator fans )

I tried numerous places (doesn't help that it was sunday) all to no avail.

I ended up finding some 3/8bsp brass fittings, which I then tried to tap into the centre of the original ones.
This worked for the first, but the second I got greedy and put the tap in to far snapping the head from the external threaded body leaving me one fitting down not being able to finish the job.

I'm going down to Pirtek or similar tomorrow, but It would help if i knew what size & thread they are.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers Dave.

Well went to Pirtek and after much mucking around I had something that I could use.

Needed M20 Fine thread Hydraulic hose fittings - although i had to part the end of the fitting in the lathe to get them to seal.

Not a hard job just lots of mucking around to get it all to work.

    Hope this helps someone

    Dave.

M20 x 1.5. I have taps and dies available if you would like to make your own.

The one I fitted to my R380 has BSP parallel threads - can't check the dia just now. Use Dowty washers for sealing.

Definitely not M20 fine in mine - maybe they changed for later years.

can confirm that the tube nuts on my t/stat housing are M20 x 1.5 too.

These use an O ring on the tube.

Well 4 days in and it is still working with no leaks (mind you the engine oil cooler hose decided it wanted to split on the monash freeway on the way to work )

John, what exactly are the Dowty washers?

My digital camera is still unfixed at present, but I will endeavour to take some photos soon.

    Cheers
    Dave.

Dowty seals are basically washers with an elastomer like an O ring bonded into them

Pic of mine below. The hose end fittings are JIC (37* flare).

BSP parallel fittings seal on the washer face. The Dowty washers can be seen where the fittings screw into the housing - they have bonded rubber seals with lips on both sides to seal.

Dowty is a UK aerospace company who also make hydraulic equipment. Any hydraulic shop or hyd hose company such as Enzed or Pirtek will know what you are after if you ask for Dowty washers - it tends to be used as a generic name now (like hoover for vacuum cleaners).

I don't know the origin of my cooler adaptor - obviously earlier than those you have. I do now that they were fitted to LT77's in some rangies that had the towing package fitted.

BSP parallel is in very common use for ports in hydraulic valves and cylinders. Tapered threads such as BSPT and NPT ports/fittings suffer from overtightening causing failure of valve bodies.
