Removing Diff Assembly on Salisbury Rear?

I'm trying to remove the rear differential assembly from a Salisbury rear diff (94 Tdi Defender) The workshop manual states the use of a special tool called an axle spreader (18G131C) to remove and an axle compressor to re-fit. Is there a method to remove/refit the assembly without using the special tools?

It is easy enough to remove the entire diff and take it to an LR specialist (with required tools) to remove and inspect.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Henry

    Drain the diff.

Undo the five bolts on the spiders either side, slide them complete with the axles out enough to disengage the diff.

Then undo the bolts on the diff cover, take off the two bearing cups and remove the diff - might need a tap with a rubber mallet or so.

All up takes around 15 minutes at most from start to finish. Don't need to raise the vehicle, remove the wheels anything - just do the above and she'll be out easy for you.

As stated before, removing it may require some motivation (for lack of better words) to get it in.

    Cheers

The axle spreader is just a big clamp that lets you squash the casing top & bottom. When 'squashed', you get just enough clearance to get the diff in and out without lots of swearing and possibly damaging things.

It shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate your own tool for the job.

a tyre lever or two works OK.

Helped Dad over twenty years ago on a Dana 60 a few times (which is the same as a Sals, almost)
