    wrong ratio. Not happy jan.

    Hey guys. I finished putting my new diff in the series 3 LWB but when i checked the ratio while jacked up it was not the same as the rear. Unfortunatly i diddn't count the crown and pinion teeth before I put it in which is my fault. But i have just wasted half a sunday doing it The crap thing is I had to send my old one in for exchange which was a 4:7:1 and they sent me a 4:6:1. MY question is.. what series 3 had a 4:6:1 ratio in it. maybe a 6 cylinder? as mine is a 4 deisel.

    Also there are some numbers stamped on the crown and pinion which are.


    9129 on the one they sent me and...

    6510 on the one i had in it.

    what do these numbers mean as they dont represent the ratio.

    All Series 3 except the Stage 1 had 4.7:1 diff ratios all Stage 1/County Defenders/ Range Rovers and Discos had 3.54:1 excepting the Army 6x6 they too had 4.7:1.
    I think there was a 4.6:1 ratio in some of the old Rover cars but they would be pretty rare
    How do you conclude that it is 4.6:1

    I counted 46 teeth on the crown and 13 teeth on the pinion, so I was told you just drop the last digit on the pinion and call it 4:6:1.

    I just went out and looked at my spare and a 3.54:1 had 13x46 so someone has sent you a Range Rover diff by the sound of it

    Thanks for that. I did think it was for a V8 or some thing with more guts that a 2.25 diesle.

    I will just have to send it back and have a winge .

    46 teeth on crown and 13 teeth on pinion is a 3.54 46/13=3.53846=3.54

    Hey Will,

    The 3.54 was out of the Stage1 Series 3 which was the V8 or Isuzu powered ones. Was it just the diff or the whole axle that you changed? If it was the whole axle you may want to just change the diff part back to 4.7 as the axles/CV's are stronger.

    Depending on what motor you have, you might be well off. Fit a 3.54 to the other end. That's what I want for my Holden 202 powered IIA
