Rust inside axle housing
Hi All,
I have the hubs and stubs off the back axle of my 130 to fit Hy-Tough axles and do the oil lube convert.
There is a lot of oil soked rust flakes sitting in the axle tubes, it's coming from a large rusty area on the top (inside) of the axle tubes.
I assume its had water in it at same stage, and for a while I'd guess.
Any ideas ? Other than pull the whole thing out, strip it and get into it with a wire bush and maybe try and paint it. Oh and fit a locker at the same time
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony, maybe you can make up a tool to scrape off the flaking rust and then use rust converter applied by brush on a stick.I did this when I repaired a fuel stove with corrosion problems quite some years ago and it worked well for that.I suggest tapping the axle housing all over to see if the corrosion has weakened the housing in any way.Weak sections would sound dull compared to the solid majority. If you are going to remove the diff to instal a locker, then you would be able to flush out the whole axle housing to remove any stray flakes of rust.Cheers, 130man.

First check your diff breathers (if you have any
) for leaks or if they are blocked.
If they are blocked they maybe sucking water from somwhere else eg the little axle cap things in the center of the rim.

more than likely just from condensation.
I found the same when installing the Maxi axles six years ago.
Can't exactly remember how I cleaned it up, then fed in an oil soaked rag much like a bore cleaning patch in a rifle to oil soak the area.

Mine was also full of rust as well, I just figured it was from condensation as it was all at the top of the housing.
Cleaned out what I could and left the rest there.

Common problem... Rover never painted the inside so it rusts....
make a half disc (half moon) scraper on a stick and then put it in to the center, lift it up and scrape it all off and drag it out...
Ive had to do it to all 3 salisburys ive had and a few rover diffs...
