Just plumb it up
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at using a Falcon power steering pump on the rangie as I am doing a 5.0EFI conversion, so would like to keep the serpantine belt setup, so it would be alot easier to keep the unit with the motor. The pipes shouldn;t be a problem as i can get Enzed or someone to make up the associated adapters.
Question I have is, has anyone ran a non Rangie power steering pump ? Had any problems with defferent pressure ect... to run the rover steering box ?
Just want to make sure it's going to run the rover box ok before I do any mods with hoses ect..
Cheers.
Shayne

I had the seals replaced in the power steer box on my '89 110 a few years ago. During the pressure testing after the seals were fitted he managed to crack the housing. When the steering is moved left or right (cant remember which), the housing is pressureised, and the 1200 PSI he was testing with was enough to split the housing while on the test bench. I do believe the land rovers use a low pressure pump or relief valve, though RAVE shows 1000-1100 PSI to be normal. There was nothing wrong with the housing when it went in, just weeping from the sector shaft seal.

There is a relief valve on the housing. It is under the fitting that one of the pipes screw into,I can't remember which one. Pat

in hindsight i possibly would not convert to a vn pump,at the time i was quoted $1200 here in darwin and i needed to have the landy going.i think the price has halved now.i will try for pics but wont be able to clearly see the mounting plate because of the alternator etc.the plate is only made out of flat steel with holes drilled in the right places as well as cutouts so it can slide for adjustments.i think i fitted a smaller or was it larger pulley to the pump and the alternator.v belt style.
cheers, you did post that link earlier but unless i am missing something i can't find much info on the conversion i wish to do.
I wish to fit the EL pump, but it only has one bolt and a longer outrigged support bar, still trying to think how i will attach to my rover motor.
By the way this pump cost me $30 SH 3 months warranty, saw another go on ebay same place $20 Cheeeaaap conversion, IF IT WORKS.
Also heard that these pumps can be kitted to 800psi, double what i beleive to be the normal opperating pressure, but not sure if box will handle that pressure.
